Essendon snapped a four game losing streak to coast past Sandringham by 62 points on Saturday as Luke Armstrong reports.
In front of a large crowd at Windy Hill, the Bombers had too much class all over the ground. Looking capable coming out of defence, the Bombers controlled the ball early, their midfielders feeding the forwards successfully.
Nick O’Brien kicked the first goal for Essendon and this was quickly followed by Lachlan Dalgleish with their second. Tayte Pears was solid in defence and helped set up the play from down back.
Coming back through the VFL for Sandringham was Justin Koschitzke, who kicked three goals, took some great marks out on the lead, and got a bunch of hit-outs He was however shadowed in the ruck by fellow AFL listed player, David Hille. Although leaving the ground under the blood rule at the nineteen minute mark of the second term, Hille returned, and played off the forward flank. Koschitzke took a gutsy mark, and got the full return for Sandringham to open the second term after his side trailed by 21 points at quarter time. Despite a six goal term by the Zebras, the Bombers matched this to retain a 23-point lead at half time.
The visitors were able to close the gap to just seven points at the 12 minute mark of the third, after the Zebras started to find the ball more. From that point on though, the Bombers dominated on the scoreboard kicking four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 34 points at the final change.
A five goal to one final term put the seal on a comprehensive 62 point win for Essendon.
Leroy Jetta was in great form for the Bombers and had a high output game across the full four quarters. In the first term, he had a number of important centre clearances, and pushed his side inside fifty. In the third he provided a game highlight, as he gathered the football just inside Essendon’s attacking zone, balking around a defender, then charged into goal along the boundary line, dribbling it home.
Essendon plays Williamstown on Sunday 16th June at Burbank Oval, Sandringham are at home to Box Hill Hawks on the same day.
