Trevor Barker Beach Oval plays host to the clash between Sandringham and Casey Scorpions this Saturday with both sides entering into the weekends match-up in fine form following convincing round six and seven victories. Alexander McLeman previews the round eight contest.
Casey enters Saturdays match with Sandringham off the back of a terrific performance against reigning premiers Geelong at Simonds Stadium last weekend. Casey inflicted the second straight loss of this year for the Cats which has lifted the Scorpions up into fifth on the ladder, only two points behind Port Melbourne who lead the way. Casey’s impressive attacking play allowed the likes of Jack Fitzpatrick (five goals), Jesse Hogan (five goals), Ben Hughes and Jake Best (two goals each) to run riot against a Cats team who looked unstoppable two weeks ago. The Scorpions clearly have the talent and depth to compete with the best. The Scorpions know that a win this weekend will solidify their position in the top 5 of the VFL while setting a steady course to the finals.
Sandringham had a bye during the round seven matches which followed a dominant performance against cellar dweller Bendigo Gold with 76-point win. The Zebras kicked 21 goals from 10 different scorers, demonstrating the strong, diverse and skillful group of players Sandringham has at its disposal. The Zebras will be looking for Brodie Murdoch, who was best on ground against Bendigo, Trent Dennis-Lane (four goals) Chris Michaliades, Adam Cockie and Cameron Shenton (all three goals each) to assert themselves on the contest early against Casey, especially with Myke Cook and Marcus Marigliani on the sidelines. Another win this weekend will put Sandringham back into the hunt and close the gap between themselves and the top sides this season.
