Former Peter Jackson VFL star Brett Goodes is one step closer to realising his AFL dream after being promoted to the Western Bulldogs’ primary list.
The 29-year-old has been a revelation as a key member of the Bulldog’s defensive unit in the NAB Cup, vindicating the club’s decision to select him in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
Despite making his name at the North Ballarat Roosters, a stint that yielded two VFL premierships, it was the defender’s performance over the past two seasons at Williamstown that resulted in a rookie spot at the Bulldogs.
Goodes, the younger brother of dual Brownlow medalist Adam Goodes, has proved in three pre-season matches that he has the ability to slot straight into Brendan McCartney’s side.
Speaking yesterday at the TAC Cup and Peter Jackson VFL launch, Goodes said it was a relief to finally hear the news.
“It was actually after the Richmond game that Jason McCartney (Bulldogs’ list manager) came over and said I might need to fill out some paper work on Monday,” he said.
“Over the years there were definitely times when I didn’t think it was ever going to happen.”
“Right up until the Bulldogs asked me to do the pre-season I still wasn’t thinking about playing AFL football.”
After winning a spot on primary list, Goodes said his focus would now turn to winning selection in Round 1.
Western Bulldogs General Manager of Football James Fantasia told westernbulldogs.com.au that Goodes was deserving of his spot after his solid showing in the NAB Cup competition.
“Brett’s leadership skills and his application to his football has been first-class, and we are not only seeing the benefits on the field, but he is providing valuable support to his younger teammates off it,” Fantasia said.
“We are extremely proud of how much he has developed as a person throughout his time here, and as a footballer over the past few months and I look forward to seeing him continue his good form this season.”
Former Williamstown defender Jack Frost was another to receive good news yesterday with a promotion to Collingwood’s primary list.
The 21-year-old has looked at home on the big stage throughout the NAB Cup, proving he can match it with the competition’s key forwards.
Frost’s chances of a Round 1 call-up appear to hinge on availability of Ben Reid, who is still recovering from injury.
Former VFL stars, Orren Stephenson and Ed Curnow were also upgraded before yesterday’s deadline, giving the pair a chance to cement a senior spot at Richmond and Carlton respectively.
