We take a look at all the round 11 Peter Jackson VFL matches.
GEELONG VS PORT MELBOURNE
The month of May was not the friendliest to Geelong, and June has not started much better as the Cats try to stop their slide down the ladder having lost their last three on the trot. Rewind back to the end of round 6, and this weekends matchup between Geelong and Port Melbourne would have been a top of the ladder clash, with the Cats sitting pretty in second spot (rewind either further and these two were meeting in the 2002 Grand Final – which is featured this weekend in the AFL Victoria Record). Fast forward to round 11, and it is seventh versus first. Port Melbourne will not be keen to help the Cats back up the ladder, especially with Casey clawing at their top spot on the ladder. Toby Pinwill resumed in the Development League last week, and is a chance to return to the senior line up this week, along with Clayton Hinkley. Gary Ayres will be hoping his side has a better start to this game, after an inaccurate start against Frankston, and knowing Geelong got off to a flier last round. The Cats had trouble containing the likes of Thomas and Driscoll last weekend, and it will get no easier for them this weekend with Galea, Cain, Burston and co. up forward for Port. Last minute call up to all three AFL emergencies hampered Geelong last week, and they will be hoping to keep their hands on their emergencies for this game.
WILLIAMSTOWN VS BOX HILL HAWKS
The roller coaster season for the Box Hill Hawks continues this weekend, and if their formline is anything to go by, this weekend will be a loss to Williamstown. Seagulls fans will be pleased that it is a designated L week for the Hawks, with the Box Hill season following a steady path of L W L W L W L W. Coach Damian Carroll will be hoping to break that trend, and spoil the Seagulls home ground return as they are the first senior sides to go head to head at Burbank Oval since August 2010. Williamstown themselves suffered an upset of sorts against Bendigo last weekend, especially after racing out to a 20 point lead just 10 minutes into the first term. After that Bendigo proceeded to kick 13 of the next 15 goals to race out to a 51 point lead in the third term. The Seagulls fought back to see a final deficit of only 19 points, but the damage had been done by a goalless second term. Zeph Skinner returns for the Seagulls this week, whilst 7 goal Box Hill forward Jack Gunston has been named on an extended bench for Hawthorn.
CASEY SCORPIONS VS COLLINGWOOD
If you are out at Casey Fields this weekend, no, the Casey jumpers did not get mixed in with the coloured wash during the week. The Casey Scorpions are hosting their annual Pink Ribbon Day game versus Collingwood. In a great initiative by the club, the Scorpion jumpers are turned pink for this once a year occasion to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Research. The pink Scorpions will be trying to take their wins to 8 for the season, before they have the bye next round. Jordan Gysberts returns this week, adding to the depth of the side. Collingwood will wait for the final list to be decided by their AFL side before their lineup is complete, with Wood, Young, Ugle, Seedsman, Elliott and Didak all named on an extended AFL bench. Lucas Cook has been one of the main targets for the Scorpions in recent weeks, but the Magpies will need to find more forward targets with Paine and Ceglar their main avenues to goal – two of only five goal scorers last week.
COBURG TIGERS VS BENDIGO
Fancy a trip to Shepparton over the long weekend? If the answer is yes, then you can pop in and see the clash between the Tigers and the Gold whilst you are there this Sunday. Coburg will be fresh from having a two week break, and will be looking for their first win since the end of April. Bendigo have bounced back to form in recent rounds with back to back wins, and will look to try and extend their gap between themselves in eighth and Coburg and North Ballart currently both one game outside. This is an important game for the Tigers, to remain in contact with the top 8 nearing the half way mark of the season. Luke McGuane returns from injury this week and was in great form before he spent a few weeks on the sidelines. David Astbury will also return for the Tigers. Bendigo will be hoping their players are able to stay on the field this week, and the stretcher is not need with up to 5 players last week suffering from injuries or knocks during the game – Trent Shinner and Anthony Long two of the players not taking their place in the side this week. They will be ably replaced by Michael Hibberd and Mark McVeigh.
FRANKSTON VS SANDRINGHAM
Sandringham have won four on the trot, and dropped to third last weekend with the bye. They will be keen to continue that run against Frankston who after a positive start against Port Melbourne last week suffered a big defeat to the tune of 89 points. Big Khan Haretuku continued his good form up forward with another three goals, but he will need further support from his other forwards and mids for the Dolphins to get the points. The Zebras have been getting a good mix of output from their VFL and AFL listed players this season, with numerous avenues to goal. The battle of the mids in this game will be important, with State players Kyle Martin and Myke Cook to battle it out from their respective midfields. In the ruck, James Orr has been able to consolidate his senior spot at Frankston, and will go head to head with Michael Sikora.
