Bendigo recorded their first win since round 4 on Saturday, defeating giant killers Collingwood on their home turf by 32 points. After the Magpies came out the previous week to bring reigning premiers Port Melbourne’s 28 game winning streak to an end, they were not able to back up that performance against a determined Bendigo outfit.
Bendigo grabbed the lead early in the game, and never relinquished it, despite Collingwood getting within 4 points at three quarter time. Unlike the previous round where the Magpies held off Port, Bendigo this week ran away from the Magpies in the final term kicking five goals to the home sides four behinds.
Bendigo cocaptain Trent Shinners said it was pleasing to return to the winners list.
“We have been very up and down, and footy is a lot more fun when you win, and when you are playing well, so it was a really good win.”
Justin Maddern led the way up forward for Bendigo Gold kicking four goals, and he was well supported by Elliott Kavanagh with 3, and Jordan Williams and Matt Little with two each. The Gold’s Essendon contingent of Kyle Reimers (25 disposals), Mark Baguley (23) and Henry Slattery (19 and 14 tackles) led the way, with Rick Ladson (23) and ruckman Dean Putt also amongst the better players. Scott Gumbleton returned for Bendigo and had 8 disposals before being rested after half time.
Collingwood’s major goal scorers were Mitch Hahn, Chris Tarrant and Jamie Elliott with two each. Their best were Kris Pendlebury in defence with 29 disposals, Cam Wood (36 hitouts) and Kris Ugle.
