KNIGHTS TO LEAD GEELONG
Geelong has employed Matthew Knights as Senior Coach of their VFL side for 2012. Knights has coached at several different levels throughout his career; AFL, VFL and SANFL. Knights was Senior Coach at the Bendigo Bombers from 2005 – 2007, twice taking them to the Acacia VFL Finals. He then took on the head coaching role at Essendon where he led the team into the finals in 2009.
Dale Amos, Geelong’s coach for the last 3 years, took up an Assistant Coaches role for Geelong’s AFL side at the end of 2011, handing over his previous role to Knights.
Matthew Knights will be assisted by Max Rooke, ex-Geelong player, who was appointed as Development Coach in October 2011. Rooke’s focus will be on developing the young footballers within this side.
The experience this Coaching Team has on and off the field should provide Geelong with some beneficial guidance in the 2012 Peter Jackson VFL Season. Add to their experience the likes of Dom Gleeson who will be a playing assistant coach at the VFL Cats in 2012, and Geelong might be pushing for a return to finals football.
Coach’s Comment:
As always the blokes have trained really hard over the summer break and we have had 3 hit-outs over the last month. This weekend will be our final hit-out before the season proper, as we have the bye in Round 1.
Dom Gleeson has come on board this year who will be a great addition to us and provide great support and on field coaching for our academy players. We also expect to see a lot of improvement from our second and third year players in 2012
- Max Rooke, Development Coach
