Coburg Tigers have bounced back from their defeat against bottom placed Frankston to finish their season on a positive note. The Tigers travelled to Bendigo and defeated the top eight Bombers 17.17.119 to Bendigo 9.8.62. Despite the final round victory, the Tigers stayed in 11th position to finish the season with six wins.
Unlike the previous week where Coburg was jumped in the first quarter by the Dolphins, this week it was the visitors that set the agenda. A five goal to three first term helped set up the win for the Tigers, who were never headed.
The Tigers built on their lead at every break, going from 15 points up at quarter time, to 28 points at half time. A seven goal to two third term put the result beyond doubt with the Tigers leading by 55 points at the final change, in the end running out 57 point winners.
Willie Wheeler continued his great season for the Tigers with another best on ground performance, with the goals shared between Rhett Jordan, Dean MacDonald and Rowan Hore with three each. For Bendigo, Henry Slattery was their leading goal scorer with two, whilst Ricky Dyson, Sam Lonergan and Jacob Thompson were their best.
Just like Frankston had the wood over Coburg this year, the same can be said for the Tigers over Bendigo. The round 22 result was the second time this year that Coburg had defeated the Bombers, adding to their two wins this year against another finals bound club, the Casey Scorpions.
Bendigo Bombers will need to regroup from their poor finish to the season, as they take on Northern Bullants in an Elimination Final on Sunday at TEAC Oval. The Bombers won only three of their last nine matches for the season, and in that time they were only able to defeat Box Hill from the top eight teams.
