There will be plenty of milestones celebrated this weekend in the Peter Jackson VFL.
North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald this round moves past Brunswick, Port Melbourne and Dandenong coach Jim Cleary, into outright second place on the all-time VFA/VFL coaching list. Like Cleary, FitzGerald has coached three clubs – North Ballarat, Port Melbourne and Springvale – over a 13 season duration.
He also coached TAC Cup club North Ballarat Rebels for two years – 2005/06 – before beginning his second stint as coach of the Roosters and guided them not only to the club’s historic first VFL premiership, but three flags on the trot. FitzGerald will celebrate his milestone match as the Roosters venture to Highgate Rec. Reserve to take on the Coburg Tigers on Saturday.
At TEAC Oval in the Port Melbourne versus Sandringham game, Port’s Ryan McMahon will become just the seventh player in the club’s 125-year history to reach the 200-game milestone. McMahon went from playing two senior games in his first season with Port Melbourne to playing 20 the next season and from that point forging a career that has earned him utmost respect from his peers, both teammates and opponents.
Finally in the big ‘home’ game for Williamstown and Werribee Tigers on Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval, Ben Davies will gain Life Membership to the Seagulls when he runs out for his 100th game for Williamstown.
Congratulations to all players this weekend with their milestone games.
