IT was an ugly game on an ugly day and it produced an ugly result for Box Hill, the Hawks going down to Casey Scorpions by 43 points at Casey Fields on Sunday.
In some of the most wintry conditions Melbourne has delivered all year, with non-stop rain and freezing winds, the match was never going to favour the young Hawks.
Despite kicking just two goals through the first three quarters of the game, the Hawks battled hard to be within 19 points at the final change.
With only three Hawthorn-listed players available, along with five rookies, the Hawks were low on experience and it showed in the final quarter, as the stronger bodies of the Scorpions began to dominate around the clearances.
The Hawks were spent, and Casey kicked away to win 10.10 (70) to the Hawks' 3.9 (27)
Box Hill coach Damian Carroll said he couldn't complain about his players' efforts.
