Frankston last week broke their 26 game losing streak in the reserves when they staged a come from behind win against the Northern Bullants. The Dolphin reserves last tasted victory in round 18, 2009 when they held on for an eight point win against Sandringham.
Early in the third term however, victory looked slim for the home side as they trailed by close to six goals, but an amazing turnaround saw them trail by just eight points at three quarter time.
15 minutes into the last quarter Anthony Simpson kicked one on the run to put the Dolphins in front, and they never looked back.
“It is fantastic,” Frankston reserves coach Shane Mottram said about his sides’ performance after the match.
“The boys have worked hard over the last three weeks with their endeavour, applied themselves on the track working on their skills and have done a lot of repetition work to improve the skills and to hit our targets under fatigue, so it has paid off.
“It has been building – the last two weeks the effort has been fantastic. Against Port Melbourne last week I think at three quarter time we were only eight goals down against one of the top sides. It was always going to come, the guys set themselves for a win, and they worked hard and got it.”
Mottram was pleased with his sides’ revival, especially in front of the parochial home crowd for ‘I love Frankston’ football day.
“It was 10 goals to four at the 10 minute mark of the third quarter. In the last 50 minutes of football we kicked nine goals to nil which was fantastic.”
Despite hitting the front half way through the last term, it was not till goals to Nick Boland and James Anwyl that the Dolphins coach thought they were home.
“No matter what team you are playing, once you hit the front you gain that little bit of momentum and confidence. In the coaches box we were thinking ‘get that one or two more’ and a bit of a buffer, and we should be able to defend the lead.”
While they may have liked to have gone 2-0 from their two matches last weekend against the Northern Bullants, Frankston were pretty pleased to go 1-1 for the day for the first time since round two, 2010 (the last time the seniors won).
