AS the Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Finals Series continued today, Box Hill Hawks and Port Melbourne progressed through victorious.
The matches helped decide one of the two Semi Final clashes for next week, as Williamstown will now face Port Melbourne.
Casey Scorpions, defeated last night by Geelong by 49 points, will await the winner of Sunday's Werribee Tigers versus Essendon match.
Box Hill Hawks will enjoy the week off before a Preliminary Final in a fortnights time.
Hawks’ final quarter flurry defeats Seagulls
Box Hill Hawks are through to a Preliminary Final after its 30-point win over Williamstown today.
The Hawks kicked six unanswered goals to finish off the game, and earn a week’s break.
The home sides’ tall timber proved the difference in the final term with Sam Grimley kicking three final term goals, along with Bryce Retzlaff with one (two for the game).
Liam Tobin made a triumphant return from injury - his first senior game since round 14 - with three goals and was among the best for the Hawks.
Williamstown were well in the contest for the first three quarters, with a pair of unanswered goals either side of the quarter time break helping them to a 14-point lead.
While Box Hill swung the momentum their way with four goals before half time, to hold a nine-point lead, the Seagulls' bounced back again with Dylan Addison and Jack Johnstone helping the visitors back to the lead in the third term.
The Hawks however finished the stronger, running out 30-point winners.
Tobin and Grimley finished with three each, with Sam Cust and Retzlaff kicking two. For Williamstown, Addison was their only mutliple goal kicker with two.
Best for Box Hill were Kyle Cheney in defence, and Sam Iles and Jonathon Simpkin in the middle.
The Seagulls' best were Talia, Johnstone and Jack Charleston.
WIlliamstown now faces Port Melbourne next weekend in both the seniors and development league.
Port eliminates Collingwood
Port Melbourne sent Collingwood packing from the Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Finals Series with a 25-point win.
While the Borough led from start to finish, the game was not beyond doubt going into the final term, as they were unable to put away the Magpies, leading by just 13 points.
After a defensive opening to the final term, Jackson Paine kicked his third to pull Collingwood to within seven points, and set the game up for a grand stand finish.
But three final term goals from Port’s Heath O’Farrell put the game beyond doubt as they kicked four unanswered goals to book a Semi Final berth with Williamstown.
Port Melbourne’s defence was marshalled superbly all afternoon by their General Sam Pleming at centre half back, with Danny Hughes and Dan Noonan also completing shut down roles.
Toby Pinwill (27 disposals), Nathan Batsanis (25) and Tom Sullivan (19) gave their side the drive out of the middle they needed, with the unheralded pairing of Wayde Skipper and Sam Gilmore proving effective against the experience of Darren Jolly and Ben Hudson.
Jack Hellier (25 disposals) and Kyle Martin (27 and two goals) were the best for the Magpies, with Martin shaking the early close tag from Michael Dillon.
Peter Yagmoor (17) completed a close checking role on Port’s Josh Scipione, keeping him to just the one goal, with Jack Frost and Sam Williams among Collingwood’s better players.
Julian Rowe led the goal scoring for Port Melbourne with four majors – kicking three of his team’s first four goals – with Dean Galea and O’Farrell kicking three apiece.
Paine led the way for Collingwood with three, but Martin was their only other multiple goal kicker with two.
