THERE was a sense of familiarity in the way the Bendigo Gold were beaten by Collingwood in their VFL clash at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday.
In an almost identical script to the Gold’s QEO loss to Sandringham two weeks earlier, they were evenly-matched with the Magpies in the first quarter, dropped away in the second and third terms, before charging home in the last quarter, only to fall short.
In front of a big crowd of at least 1200, the Magpies won by 13 points, 13.17 (95) to 11.16 (82), to inflict the Gold’s fourth-straight loss, as well as extending Bendigo’s QEO hoodoo to its past nine games at its home ground without a win.
“Once again, we just left ourselves too much work to do going into the last quarter,” Gold coach Hayden Skipworth said.
“It was another disappointing result for us.”
The Gold led by a point at quarter-time, 3.4 to 3.3, before the Magpies dominated the second term and should have put the result beyond doubt.
Kicking to the city end, the Magpies peppered the goals in the second quarter, with only their inaccuracy keeping the Gold within striking distance at half-time.
The Magpies kicked a wasteful 4.9 in the second quarter to Bendigo’s 1.3 to lead by 23 points at half-time.
At one stage during the second quarter the Magpies had 10-straight scoring shots as the Gold struggled to clear the ball from defence and were plagued by constant skill errors and turnovers.
