Continuing their commitment to coverage of the Peter Jackson VFL in 2012, the ABC last weekend extended their broadcast of the Bendigo versus Williamstown clash past their usually programming deadlines.
After a number of delays during the game due to injuries and the use of the stretcher in the third term, the final siren did not sound in the game until 3:58pm.
However unlike last year’s round 20 coverage between Williamstown and Port Melbourne - where the broadcast switched to their 4pm scheduled program - ABC TV stayed at Windy Hill to capture post match interviews, and completed their game day coverage.
ABC TV VFL producer Jacob Walker said during the week that last year’s incident has ensured that all future games will be shown in full.
“The Round 10 Bendigo v Williamstown clash did run over time with the final siren sounding at 3:58pm. The ABC's standard off-air time is 3:57pm so traditionally this would have put the final stages of the match in jeopardy.
“It's important for our loyal viewers to take comfort in the fact that our ongoing relationship with the VFL means they will always see each broadcast game in full.”
Walker explained that “as part of the ABC's commitment to VFL football, the broadcast was extended by five minutes, to 4:02pm ensuring viewers were able to watch the match in its entirety.”
This not only allowed viewers to see the game siren to siren, it also provided the opportunity to see the Best on Ground interview with Phil as per standard weeks.
ABC TV heads out to broadcast Williamstown versus Box Hill Hawks this Saturday from 1pm.
