The North Ballarat Roosters have added the prestigious Hollioake Medallion Award to its list of stunning achievements in 2008.
The annual award is presented by the Ballarat Sportsman's Club with the Roosters announced as the town's team of the year last night.
It caps a stunning year for the Roosters in 2008. The club claimed its first VFL premiership and became the first country club to win a state league flag.
Chairman Peter Wilson told the Courier newspaper it was a true community effort.
“We were really pleased this year to see that we had the support of the community,” Wilson said.
“We’re not just the North Ballarat Football Club representing our members and supporters ... we really felt that this year we had enormous support from the whole community.”
North Ballarat dominated the Ballarat Football League winning 15 senior Premierships before it joined the VFL in 1996.
The Roosters have played in six VFL finals series and made the grand final on three occassions, with 2008 being a case of third-time lucky.
Captain Shaune Moloney said the Medallion was reward for not only last season but years of hard work.
“It caps off a great year, but it more than caps off a journey we’ve been on," Moloney said.
