AFL Victoria received a submission Monday from the Hawthorn and Box Hill Football Clubs seeking permission for Hawthorn listed player Taylor Duryea to play in Box Hill’s 2nd VFL Preliminary Final against the Werribee Football Club this weekend.
Whilst acknowledging that under the current rules pertaining to the participation in finals, the player didn’t qualify to play this weekend in the VFL finals, the submission was based on fairness to the player and considering the unusual circumstances with the Hawthorn and Box Hill Football Clubs playing preliminary finals in the VFL and AFL competitions over different weekends.
Acknowledging the merit of the submission, AFL Victoria felt it should consult the Werribee Football Club, as Box Hill’s opponents, in reaching its decision.
After consulting with the Werribee Football Club, AFL Victoria has decided to allow Taylor Duryea to play for Box Hill FC, pending selection, in the 2nd VFL Preliminary Final, on the proviso that Hawthorn listed players Jed Anderson and Matt Spangher – who both played in Hawthorn’s senior team last week and who are both eligible to play in the VFL finals - do not play this weekend for Box Hill FC.
AFL Victoria believes this is a fair and reasonable outcome for both clubs and in particular for player Duryea.
AFL Victoria and the Hawthorn Football Club thank the Werribee Football Club for putting the greater interest of the player and the relationship of both competitions before any self-interests - both organisations are appreciative of their support in arriving at this outcome.
