Werribee Tigers captain Dom Gleeson has advised the club that he has accepted an offer to join the Geelong Football Club in the VFL next season. Gleeson has accepted a playing assistant coach role under new Cats VFL coach Matthew Knights plus will be working in Geelong’s AFL Development area.
Reflecting on his time at Werribee, Gleeson told the Geelong website “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Werribee and I thank them for the opportunities they have provided me over the past 8 years.”
Werribee Tigers President John Nicol spoke highly of the departing Tigers captain.
“Dom has been our captain for the last three seasons and is a dual best and fairest winner, life member and games record holder. It is an understatement to say he is a very important part of this clubs history.
“While I am sad to see him move on, like others before him, I am proud of what our club has given to him and vice versa. In 2012 we will have a new coach and now a new captain,” Nicol said.
“I want to thank Dom for his contribution to this club on and off the field and wish him well for the future”.
Geelong general manager of football Neil Balme welcomed Gleeson to the club.
“Dominic will add experience to our VFL team, which has many young players making their way toward being AFL players,” Balme said.
“We also believe that he has the attributes and character to add to our young player’s experience in a coaching role, and this is the first step for Dominic as he transitions from playing to hopefully a career in coaching. He has always been a good leader and we’re excited to add such a respected player and person to our club.”
Over recent years the Werribee Football Club have provided a number of players and coaches with a pathway to achieve opportunities at the highest level. Recent examples include: James Podsiadly - WFC to Geelong premiership player, Michael Barlow - WFC to Fremantle and Paul Satterley - WFC to assistant coach Melbourne Football Club.
Werribee kicked off their preseason under new senior coach Scott West on Monday night, whilst Geelong will kick off their preseason on November 23.
