Leroy Kamau was in sensational form yesterday at the KT Woodman Classic Track Meet at Kansas State University Wichita and appears to be on the brink of shattering Peter Pulu’s 26 year old 100m national record of 10.40 seconds.Running with the assistance of a following wind of 2.4metres per second Kamau clocked 10.42 seconds to win his heat

Team Named for Pacific Mini Games

Athletics PNG have named a strong team of 23 male and 14 female athletes for the Pacific Mini Games in June with two managers and six coaches to accompany the team to Saipan. The team includes Pacific Sprint Queen Toea Wisil and Tokyo Olympian Rellie Kaputin with sprinters Leroy Kamau and Daniel Baul expected to lead the mens team.

Outdoor Season Under way

As the outdoor track and field season gets into full swing in the USA Emmanuel Wanga has continued the great form he showed indoors with his, 47.43 second clocking last weekend moving him from thirteenth place to eighth on the PNG All Time Best performance list for the 400m.

Prima Continues its support

With Athletics PNG’s distance running programme back in full swing after short break at Christmas Prima Smallgoods have again provided support with product donations. 100kg of meat products was delivered to Goroka last week courtesy of Istana limited.

Indoor National Champs

The PNG Athletes who attended the National Junior College indoor track and field championships last weekend all aquitted themselves very well with Emmanuel Wanga once again the standout. The stiff competition brought out the best in 22 year old Morobean as he improved his 600m PNG record by two full seconds from 1min 19.73 to 1min 17.69 seconds to claim third place overall and 6 valuable points

Morobe athletes Emmanuel Wanga and Leonie Beu were in great form at the weekend in the first indoor track competition of 2022. The pair were competing for Cloud County Community College at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Pacific Mini Games

Following the successful staging of the PNG Air National Championships in Kimbe earlier this month and the Grand Prix competitions in Port Moresby (July) and Kimbe (November), Athletics PNG has now completed its initial round of selections for the Pacific Mini Games being held in Saipan, Northern Marianas in June 2022.

National Championship Wrap Up

Despite the challenges posed by venue closures and other covid restrictions ,Athletics PNG is proud to have successfully staged the PNG Air National Track and Field Championships in Kimbe last weekend. Thanks to support from PNG Air and Team PNG sponsor Kumul Consolidated Holdings, APNG were able to fly all of their top PNG based athletes to the event.

Kaputin Competes Well in Tokyo

Rellie Kaputin aquitted herself extremely well today in the qualifying round of the womens long jump. Despite entering the field as the lowest ranked athlete, Kaputin managed to beat athletes from the following nations - Canada, Jamaica (2 athletes), Panama, Russian Olympic Committee, Roumania, Spain, France, Uzbekistan, Estonia and Great Britain.

Kamau completes his US competition programme

Sprinter Leroy Kamau has completed his competition programme in the United States and now heads the PNG Ranking list for 2021 in both the 100m and 200m, with clockings of 10.71secs and 21.48secs respectively.Following a period of three weeks in Kansas with his PNG teammates settling into the USA, Kamau moved to California in May for more favourable training conditions and some good competition opp

Results Grand Prix Series

The three round Grand Prix series in port Moresby concluded today. The highlights of the three day competition included a 15min 31 second 5000m run by Dilu Goiye, the best time by a PNG athlete over this distance since 2003.

PNG Air Grand Prix Series

Athletics PNG has now finalised the arrangements for the first of its two part Grand Prix Series which will be held in Port Moresby from July 2 to July 5. Sponsored by PNG Air, the event will follow a similar format to the big international one day meetings where the best available athletes are invited to take part.

Kaputin Secures Tokyo Spot

Athletics PNG apologises for the delay in confirming a date for the 2021 National Championships which is due to circumstances beyond our control. Along with many other stakeholders we have been seeking confirmation that the PNG Games will proceed as planned in November.

Domestic Competition to resume

Athletics PNG has received approval from the Deputy Controller of the National Pandemic Response Committee to resume competitions and has set the dates of 26/27 June for the Highlands Momase Championships at NSI Goroka. This will be followed by the first three rounds of the PNG Air Grand Prix Series in Port Moresby between July 1 and 5.

Olympic deadline looming

The race between Toea Wisil and Rellie Kaputin for the one place available in Athletics at the Tokyo Olympics is heading for a tense climax with both athletes having just one more competition opportunity on 19 June. The automatic qualifying standards in both the 100m and long jump are very high and have proved elusive for both athletes so far.

The news of the sudden passing of Lloyd Way has come as a shock to us all in PNG.

Lloyd was an integral part of the development of a number of our athletes , some of whom went on to represent our country at the highest levels of competition. Two Records in one day for Richard

Peniel Richard achieved the rare distinction of setting two National Records in one day last Sunday. Competing in the Lone Star Conference Championships at his home ground at West Texas A&M, Richard won the triple jump competition by some margin with a 15.59m effort, an improvement of 5cm on his own National record.

Wesley Logorava Graduates

Congratulations to Wesley Logorava on Graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Human Performance from Union College , Barbourville, Kentucky .A member of the 2015 Pacific Games Gold Medal winning 4*100m relay team, Wesley also represented PNG at the 2017 Pacific Mini Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Leonie Beu is in peak form as the track season draws to a close in the USA Junior College programme. The Morobe athlete posted massive personal best performances on sunday in both the 200m and 400m during the NJCCA Regional VI Championships at Arkansas City , Kansas. Kaputin 4th at Australian Nationals

Tokyo Olympic hopeful Rellie Kaputin was in action last weekend at the Australian National Championships in Sydney.A seasons best jump of 6.25m in Friday’s qualifying round which ranked her third in the field of 16 athletes raised hopes of a bigger jump in Sundays final, especially since her foot was well behind the board on take off for that particular jump.

Leroy Kamau heads to the USA to compete

PNG’s top sprinter Leroy Kamau left for the United States today (Monday) take part in some competitions. With travel to Australia this year having been impossible due to covid induced travel restrictions, Athletics PNG decided that Kamau should head to the USA, whose borders have remained open to travellers from many countries.

New Record for Richard

Peniel Richard finished the indoor season on a high last weekend,setting a new national indoor record of 15.56m in the Triple Jump. Competing for West Texas A&M University at the NCAA Division 2 National Indoor Track and Field championships, Richard improved his previous record indoors of 15.31m set in January this year.

Athletics PNG’s distance training squad for the World Cross Country Championships and Pacific Mini Games next year had their first competition last weekend at the National Sports Institute in Goroka. Senior Athletes conduct awareness

Team PNG Heroes Sharon Toako and Poro Gahekave joined the distance runners at NSI last weekend to pass on some valuable advice to the athletes. Vale Sophia Marai

The PNG Athletics Community is in mourning for Sophia Marai who passed away at the age of 55 at Pacific International Hospital, Port Moresby on 23 February 2021 after a long illness.Sophia,who hailed from Tarawai Island in East Sepik Province was a dedicated member of the PNG Athletics family for over three decades.

Athletes taste Success at Regional Event

Leonie Beu and Isila Apkup assisted their Cloud County team to win its first Regional Indoor Championship for 40 years at Pittsburg State University in Kansas last weekend. Beu clocked a personal best 24.68 for second place in the 200m behind team mate Mercy Ntia Obong with Apkup third in 24.71secs shortly after running 56.97 for fourth place in the 400m.

Sprinter heads to Mississippi

Promising up and coming sprinter Monica Korowi left for the United States today to join the track team at WmCarey University in Hattiesburg Mississippi whilst studying Health Information Management.
It was at the Oceania Under 18 Championships in Townsville in June 2019 where Korowi established herself as a quality sprinter after being identified by Athletics PNG at its Pacific Games selection

2021 Calendar Released

Athletics PNG has released its calendar of events for 2021 and 2022. The main focus this year will be domestic competition and the PNG Games scheduled for November. With the PNG Games in November 2021 the PNG Air National Championships will be held from June 25 to 28 in Kimbe in order to ease the burden on travelling teams.

East Sepik athlete Isila Apkup is showing great form as the Indoor track competition gets underway in the USA Junior College Programme. After posting some very encouraging times over 60m and 200m in her first two competitions the 22 year old from Ambunti moved up a gear today (Monday PNG time) and clocked a sensational 400m time of 56.94 seconds at Pittsburg State University, Kansas.

Athletes Inspired and Motivated

Three members of the National Track and Field Team joined 28 other participants from 16 sports in attending the Team PNG Hero Programme last week in Port Moresby. Poro Gahekave , Sharon Toako and Jacklyne Travertz were all nominated by Athletics PNG to undertake the training at the invitation of the PNG Olympic Committee.

New Record for Toako

Sharon Toako added the discus national record to her Javelin record on saturday 14 November when she threw 38.96m in a local competition in Port Moresby. Her throw eclipses the mark of 38.46 set by heptathlete Iammo Launa in 1993, also in Port Moresby.

The Sasi Muthuvel Stadium in Kimbe was alive on the weekend of November 14/15 as hundreds of athletes turned out for the West New Britain Championships. Four Athletes Depart for Kansas USA

Four PNG track athletes left Port Moresby this morning 23 September en route to the USA where they will take up studies at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas. The athletes are 800m runner/400m hurdler Ephraim Lerkin; 200m and 400m specialist Shadrick Tansi ; and female sprinters Leonie Beu and isila Apkup.

Leonie Beu Secures Scholarship

Leonie Beu heads off to the City of Concordia in Kansas USA on Wednesday to take up an Athletics Scholarship at Cloud County Community College. The 22 year old from Sappa village Huon district in Morobe Province won medals in all three sprint events at the Pacific Games last year as well as Gold in the 4*400m relay and silver in the 4*100m.

First President of PNG Athletics Fred Kaad

On 12th September 2020, Fred celebrated his 100th Birthday. At school Fred was a champion athlete, excelling in the sprints, hurdles, and long jump. He was also a very good Rugby player. With the outbreak of the Second World War Fred enlisted in the Australian army and in 1942 was sent to the Territories of Papua and New Guinea as a private soldier. Highlands Momase to go ahead

The PNG Air Highlands Momase Regional Championships will go ahead at the National Sports Institute in Goroka on 12/13 September. This follows the approval granted by the PNG Sports Foundation’s Pandemic Management Committee to the Sport of Athletics to resume its training and competition programme with Covid19 Safe Protocols in place.

Vale Edward Bai

It is with great sadness that Athletics PNG reports the untimely passing of Edward Bai. The oldest of three brothers who all represented PNG in the 1990’s Edward was best known as a long and triple jumper,though he was also an accomplished sprinter.Our heartfelt condolences go out to brothers Samuel and Geoffrey, to Edwards wife and children, and to all the family at this terribly sad time.

Whilst the great majority of PNG’s athletes across all sports had to scale down their training considerably this year due to the closure of training venues and cancellation of competitions, one athlete at least has been training harder than ever during the last four months.

APNG Condemns Gender Based Violence

Athletics PNG strongly condemns the horrific incident involving Debbie Kaore, a PNG representative in Rugby Union and Boxing , details of which have been widely shared on social media. Debbie’s older sister Raphaela was a member of the womens 4*100m relay team that set the National Record of 45.99 seconds at the 2007 Pacific Games.

Prima renews support

Prima Smallgoods have renewed their support of Athletics with a monthly donation of meat products for National Squad Athletes based in Lae. The athletes have continued training during the lockdown period with training consisting mostly of road running, medicine ball work and the use of a home gym.

Lae Biscuit Supports Athletes

Lae Biscuit Company has assisted National Squad Athletes training in Lae with a donation of 50 cartons of Snax Noodles. Coach Limbai to attend training course in New Zealand

Athletics Coach Malcolm Limbai left Port Moresby today for Auckland where he will attend an IAAF Level Two Coaching course in middle and long distance. The course will start tomorrow and run for eight days, concluding on 1st November. The course is being facilitated by Oceania Athletics and will be conducted at the Auckland University of Technology facility known as AUT Millenium.

Long Jumper Roland Hure is all set to leave for the United States on Saturday under a two year Oceania Australia Foundation Scholarship to attend Southwestern Community College in Iowa. PNG’s track and field team took its Pacific Games medal tally to 40 at Apia Park today with six gold three silver and six bronze medals.

Toea Wisil led the way with another outstanding performance in the 200m as she blitzed the field with a scintillating 23.45 secs clocking, and later anchoring the womens 4*400m relay to Gold.

Toea Wisil won her second gold today at Apia Park as she blitzed the field in the womens 400m to win the gold in 53.90 seconds from Leonie Beu in second with a personal best 55.71 seconds. Medal Haul for Junior Athletes in Adelaide

PNG’s four junior athletes had a very successful weekend at the South Australian Championships in Adelaide, collecting six gold and two silver medals. Eighteen year old Ephraim Lerkin led the way with outstanding runs in both the 400m hurdles and in the 400m flat, winning both events by a comfortable margin and clocking personal best times of 54.03 secs and 49.66secs respectively in the process.

Regional Championships are set to go ahead in Port Moresby ,Kavieng and Goroka during the third term school holidays. First will be the Southern Region Championships in Port Moresby from 18 to 20 September. Events will be conducted in the under 14, under 16, under 18 and open divisions.

Bisamo wins Half Marathon

18 July
The 15th Pacific Games ended on a high note for PNG Athletics with Kupsy Bisamo winning the 21.1km half marathon road race in 1hr 14min 11secs from George Richmond (Tahiti) and AvikashLal (Fiji). Miriam Goiye also ran strongly to win the bronze medal in the womens race with a time of 1hr 31min 22 secs.

Wednesday 15 July
PNG achieved a clean sweep in both the mens and womens 400m finals this evening on day three of athletics at the Pacific Games. Toea Wisil held off a fast finishing Donna Koniel to win the womens final in 54.17 seconds to Koniel’s 54.27 and Betty Burua third.

Sapolai Yao gives PNG a great start

PNG has made a great start to the Pacific Games with 16 medals after the first two days including six gold , five silver ,and five bronze. Veteran steeplechaser Sapolai Yao led the way on Monday night with a trademark display of front running with only team mate Skene Kiage being able to stay close to him over the first 2km.

Wisil equals her 200m National Record

Some very good results were achieved this weekend at the Gold Coast in the last competition for the PNG Athletes before they head to Port Moresby on Friday for the Opening Ceremony. Toea Wisil led the way on Saturday by equaling her national record in the 200m with a time of 23.46 seconds and followed this up with a very fast 100m of 11.49 on Sunday.

Athletics PNG has named a final team of 64 athletes (35 men and 29 women) for the Pacific Games in July with a total of 55 athletes confirmed in the team , four reserves and a further five athletes being given additional time to reach a specified qualifying mark by June 19. Sharon Kwarula and Rellie Kaputin continued their record breaking form in the USA last weekend with outstanding performances in Texas and Iowa respectively. Competing at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Iowa , home to the famous Drake Relays on Friday Kaputin smashed her own national record in the long jump with a leap of 5.91m in her sixth and last jump of the competition.

A number of PNG athletes turned in top performances at the Australian national Championships in Brisbane last weekend with Betty Burua twice breaking the national record in the 400m hurdles.

93rd Australian Athletics Championships

Something very special has happened for PNG Athletics in the heats of the Women’s 400m Hurdles this afternoon. With the National Record holder Donna Koniel and Betty Burua being drawn in the same heat, the race was on.
Burua was unhappy with her race in the 400m Heats (55.49) the night before and was out to atone for what she perceived was a poor performance.

Koniel Improves Further

Donna Koniel has further improved on the National 400m hurdles record that she set at the Queensland Championships two weeks ago. Running in Melbourne on Saturday night in a high profile race won by Australian Champion Lauren Boden, Koniel placed fourth in the time of 59.16 seconds to shave 0.40 seconds from her record set in Brisbane on March 7.

Paraka breaks Shot Put Record

Debono Paraka has broken the National Shot Put record of 14.45m set by Erich Momberger in the USA in 2008. Paraka, who also broke the national record for the discus throw last year travelled to Lae a couple of weeks ago and put the shot 15.07 metres. Momberger had held the record since 1990 and improved on his record in 2008 whilst participating in masters competition

Rellie Kaputin broke Lily Tua’s 24 year old National Record for the Womens Long Jump last Saturday at the Junior College Regional Indoor Championships at Buena Vista University, Storm Lake. The new mark of 5.79m bettered the old record by just 4cm and was part of a consistent series of jumps with four of the PNG girl’s six attempts being over 5.50m.

Overseas Athletes off with a good start

John Rivan has started the indoor track season in great form and is edging closer to Peter Pulu’s national record in the 60m sprint. Pulu set the record of 6.79 seconds at the 1995 World Indoor Championships in Barcelona and later that year broke Takale Tuna’s 100m record of 10.60 seconds with a time of 10.40 secs in Germany during the lead up to the World Championships in Gothenburg.

Great start for Distance Runners

PNG’s squad of long distance runners have made a great start to their competition programme in Adelaide, setting numerous personal bests and two national junior records. Top performances to date are a sensational 18min 30 seconds run in the 5000m last Saturday by 15 year old Ongan Awa, taking 15 seconds off the national junior record set by team mate Mary Kua at the PNG Games.

Polum Wins the OAA Womens Award

Long time Athletics Coach Naomi Polum has won the inaugural Oceania Athletic Association Womens Award based on her very significant contribution to the Sport over a period of 50 years. The decision was announced during the Association’s Congress Meeting on the Gold Coast last weekend.

First Indoor Meet

Several PNG Athletes in the USA have made a good start to the 2015 Indoor Track and Field season which for those in Northern Iowa began on 10th January at the University of Minnesota, Mankato. Rellie Kaputin made a great start with a 1.65m high jump and 5.47 in long jump and improved these marks to 1.67 and 5.59 last weekend at Dubuque.

Photo Finish comes into its own

The value of photo finish was highlighted at the PNG Games on Thursday last week as East New Britain and Morobe battled for the gold medal in the womens 4*100m relay, VenessaWaro led at the last exchange for Morobe but was closed down by a faster finishing Donna Koniel of East New Britain.

The 2014 PNG Games athletics competition was by far the best in the six PNG Games to date said Athletics PNG President Tony Green, not only in terms of how the event was run but for the new talent unearthed. A total of 808 athletes participated in the track and field events.

Day three of the PNG Games athletics was another busy day for sprinters with round one of the 200m, semi finals of the 400m and the semi finals of the 4*100m relays. Sixty one athletes lined up for the womens 200m and 54 for the men and with no clear favourites for either division some close races are expected in the semi finals and finals.

Monday November 24
After a rest day on Sunday the PNG Games athletics competition resumed on Monday. The highlight of the day was a high quality mens 400m hurdles final won by Penniel Joshua of New Ireland in 55.10 secs from his team mate Ephraim Lerkin with 56.15secs. Manuai Kenas of NCD prevented a clean sweep for New Ireland by edging Raymond Koniel for the bronze with a time of 56.25secs.

Saturday 22 November. The PNG Games Athletics competition got underway in Lae under clear blue skies and in front of a packed and very colourful crowd at the Sir Ignatius Kilage stadium. Kelvin Pokel of East new Britain caused an upset in the mens triple jump by taking the gold medal with 14.15m from Mong Tavol (14.00) and Penniel Richard (13.91).

Koniel awarded IAAF Scholarship

PNG rising star Donna Koniel has been awarded a scholarship by the International Association of Athletic Federations
(IAAF) and will leave for the Gold Coast after the PNG Games. Koniel whose main event is 800m is also a very competent 400m runner and 400m hurdler and has won medals in all these events at the Pacific Games.

Athletics PNG published its training squad

Athletics PNG has published its training squad for the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby which includes 35 male and 28 female athletes. Together with a development squad of 35 athletes.
In releasing the squad list Secretary Philip Rehder stressed that the training squad list is by no means the final team and selection was still open to any athlete who comes up with the required performance.

PNG Games timetable released

Following consultations with the PNG Games Office, Athletics PNG has published the timetable of events for the 2014 PNG Games. The programme kicks off on Saturday November 22 followed by a rest day on Sunday then three full days 24 to 26 November. Thursday 27 is a half day and will see several finals run between 9am and 1pm.

The PNG mens team to the IAAF World Relay Championships arrived in the Bahamas today after a confidence boosting final trial competition over 300metres at their pre departure base in Texas. Both Nelson Stone and Theo Piniau ran faster than the national record for hand timing of 33.9 seconds shared by Subul Babo, Peter Pulu, Baobo Neuendorf and Geoffrey Bai.

The PNG girls made a clean medal sweep in both the 400m and 800m on day two of the athletics competition in Wallis today.Jenny Albert won the womens 800m in 2min 19.84 from Tuna Tine (2:21.03) and Poro Gahekave (2:21.12). Day one of the Athletics competition in Wallis saw some mixed results for PNG today with a big shock in the first event as Sapolai Yao collapsed after 10 laps of the 25 lap 10000m race. Athletics PNG has named a team of eight athletes to travel to Tahiti next month for the Oceania Championships which will be held in Papeete from June 3 to 5. The athletes are Toea Wisil , Nelson Stone, Mowen Boino , Sapolai Yao , Andipas Georasi Theo Piniau, Tuna Tine and Mong Tavol. For Wisil , Stone and Boino the championships provide an opportunity to qualify for the World Championships which will be held in Moscow in August. Athletes who win the Oceania Area Championship are deemed to have automatically qualified for the World Championships. However their selection is subject to them meeting a minimum performance standard set by Athletics PNG.

Toea Wisil blitzed the field in both the 100m and 200m events at the IAAF Melbourne Track Classic at the weekend with world class sprinting. Only unfavourable wind conditions prevented her from breaking national records in both events. In the 100m Wisil clocked 11.41 seconds to win clearly from Ashleigh Whittaker (11.72). This was into a headwind of 0.7 metres per second. With a slight following wind Toea would almost certainly have run faster than Mae Koimes 11.37 national record, said Athletics PNG President Tony Green. Wisil ran 11.27 in the Olympic Games but a following wind of 2.2mps was slightly over the maximum of 2.0 allowed for the time to be recognised as a record.

Queensland Athletics Championships

Donna Koniel , Venessa Waro , Shirley Vunatup and Pauline Kupai returned from Brisbane at the weekend after competing in the relays at the Queensland Track Classic and in their individual events at the Queensland Championships. Koniel , Waro and Vunatup teamed up with Toea Wisil for the 4*100m relay where they ran a respectable 48.41 seconds . Wisil sat out the 4*400m relay to focus on her individual races and the PNG quartet ran a time of 4min 5 seconds. Koniel had an outstanding run in the 400m hurdles at the Queensland State Championships winning the bronze medal in 62.91 seconds. This is only half a second from Donna’s personal best said APNG President Tony Green so we are very pleased with this effort so early in the season.

John Rivan and Theo Piniau have been granted Oceania Foundation Scholarships to attend Southwestern Community College in Iowa, USA commencing August this year. The two nineteen year old sprinters from East New Britain who completed their Grade 12 at Kokopo Secondary School last year follow in the footsteps of Cecilia Kumalalamene , Sharon Kwarula and Wala Gime who were granted similar scholarships two years ago to attend Iowa Central Community College.

Kwarula 3rd at the Nationals

PNG’s three athletes studying at Iowa Central Community College had a very successful trip to Lubbock , Texas last weekend for the National Junior College Indoor Track and Field Championships. Sharon Kwarula led the way with a bronze medal in the 55m hurdles, breaking the Iowa Central school record in the process with a time of 8.12 seconds. Third in the nation is a great achievement said Athletics PNG President Tony Green , especially considering that Sharon has been hampered by a foot injury all season.

PNG Athletes at Iowa Central Community College

PNG’s three athletes at Iowa Central Community College in the USA have hit the ground running as the Indoor Track season got underway at the Iowa State University in the city of Ames. Sharon Kwarula was in great form clocking 9.06 seconds in the heats of the 60m hurdles and then running 8.93s in the final which was a big improvement on her best time last year of9.15secs . Teammate Wala Gime ran 8.44 in the mens 60m hurdles compared to his best 2012 time of 8.71secs. Cecilia Kumalalamene ran 3min 06.79 seconds for the 1000m race, just outside her best time last season but three seconds faster than her time at the same competition in 2012. Meanwhile Sapolai Yao was also in action at the same meet competing for his Northern Iowa College, running 16min and 02.83 seconds for the 5000m. Coach Curtis Vais was very pleased with Yao’s effort , which entailed running 25 laps on the 200m track.

Paul Pokana takes up studies in the USA

On Monday January 14 Paul Pokana became the fifth member of the National Track and Field Squad to take up studies in the USA when he joined Sapolai Yao at Northern Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) to commence a two year course of study. Cecilia Kumalalamene ,Sharon Kwarula and Wala Gime are currently half way through their second and final year at Iowa Central Community College under a scholarship programme initiated in 2011 by the Oceania Foundation.

Athletics PNG has published its calendar of events for 2013 with the major focus being the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis & Futuna early in September. A busy domestic season gets underway next month with local competitions leading up to the National Selection Trials at Easter which will be combined with the Momase Championships in Lae. Following the trials a preliminary team will be named for the Pacific Mini Games ,with athletes being expected to show good form at the National Championships in Kokopo early in July. The New Guinea Island Championships will be staged mid year , just prior to the National Championships with the venue and date to be confirmed soon. Regional Championships will also be staged in the Highland and Southern Regions in August.

The PNG Games are a proving to be a big benefit to Athletics PNG both in terms of providing an opportunity for grassroots athletes to display their talent and in terms of providing a much needed focus for national squad athletes to train seriously in the year in between Pacific Games. President Tony Green made these remarks in reflecting on the 2012 PNG Games in Kokopo which saw all 22 Provinces participating, and between them fielding a total of 700 athletes.

Kupsy Bisamo wins the 2012 PNG Games Mens Half Marathon

Kupsy Bisamo won the PNG Games mens half marathon race on Friday morning in a time of one hour 19 minutes with Skene Kiage (Simbu) second in 1 hour 21 mins and Jordan wellington (Eastern Highlands) third in 1:23. One of PNG’s top distance runners, Bisamo was the pre race favourite after winning both the 5,000m and 10,000m races on the track. Kiage had also had a good Games, winning both the 3000m flat and 3000m steeplechase. The womens race was won by Cecilia Kuman of Simbu province in 1hr 43 minutes from Jacinta Iamu of Bouganville (1:46) and Susan Kai of Eastern highlands (1:58)

Competition started with the Women’s 400m Hurdles. Nouméa bronze medal winner, Donna Koniel (ENB) was the favourite and won handily in the time of 65.89 seconds. The rain had already started to make the grass track slippery and difficult for the athletes.

Track & Field programme kicks off

The track and field programme kicked off on Saturday with Donna Koniel winning gold for East New Britain in the womens 400m hurdles in a good time of 65.89 on a heavy track at Ulapia.

However the competition had to be curtailed for safety reasons after two of the three scheduled heats in the mens 400m hurdles. Athletes were crashing into the hurdles due to the slippery conditions. The mens event will be re run on Monday afternoon. The wet conditions resulted in the cancellation of the 100m preliminary round as well as all field events and the 100m and 110m hurdles events. Only the mens 5000m and womens 10000m were conducted on Saturday afternoon. Kupsy Bisamo , competing for Morobe looked to be in for a close battle with team mate David Georasi in the 5000m. Georasi and Goroka’s Simbai Kasper tracked Bisamo for 8 laps but were unable to hang on as the Simbu born runner surged away to wn by a comfortable margin.In the womens 10,000m Cecilia Kuman was much too strong for the rest of the field and almost lapped the second placed athlete, teammate Aina Goir as she clocked a very impressive 41 minutes ten seconds. Unknown New Irelander Josepha Tapilas put in a very brave effort to finish third. The Namatanai secondary student responded to the support and encouragement of the crowd to complete the gruelling 25 lap race.

Coaching Clinics Prior to PNG Games 2012

Throws Coach James Goulding arrives from Fiji today to
attend the PNG Games in Kokopo where he will conduct some
coaching clinics and assist deliver a basic coaching course.
Goulding is a past Pacific Games Champion in the Javelin and
currently coaches Leslie Copeland from Fiji who qualified
for the London Olympics and has a personal best of 80.45metres
in the Javelin. Copeland was ranked 13th in London 2012
from a field of 44 athletes.

All 22 Provinces have nominated athletes for the Track and Field Competition at the PNG Games which is due to commence on 24 November, with a record number of 800 athletes in total. However these numbers are based on the entries submitted by Provinces before the closing date set by the PNG Games Council and Athletics officials don’t expect that number to actually turn up in Kokopo. “As the financial reality sets in we are seeing teams reduce their numbers” said Athletics PNG President Tony Green. Team ENB , as one would expect has the largest number of athletes with 62 , followed by West new Britain with 54 and the Autonomous region of Bouganville with 45. “Our officials are endeavouring to contact individual team managers to confirm the names of those actually travelling, so we can get a better idea of the number of qualifying rounds necessary” said Tournament Director Peter Salaiau

The Host Organising Committee of the PNG Games has taken delivery today of almost K900,000 worth of sports equipment, including a full range of track and field equipment. Athletics PNG President Tony Green was on hand to witness the arrival of the equipment and thank the HOC through its Chairman and former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Sir Rabbie Namaliu.

2013 Draft Calendar of Events

Athletics PNG has published its Draft Calendar of Events for 2013 with the highlights of the domestic season being the National Championship at Easter and a programme of Regional Championships during the second term school holiday at the end of June. The main focus of the season for the majority of national squad athletes will be the Mini Pacific Games in the Wallis & Futuna Islands, with an elite few also targeting the IAAF World Championship in Moscow.

Sapolai Yao

Sapolai Yao is the latest PNG track athlete to go to the United States for training and to further his education. One of the longest serving members of the PNG national athletic squad, Yao recently enrolled at Northern Iowa Area Community College on a two year programme studying human resources. He has also joined the track and cross country team. The programme is a private arrangement between Sapolai , the College and his sponsor, said Athletics PNG President Tony Green. “ Sapolai is getting some assistance from the College but its not a formal scholarship arrangement like the other athletes currently at Iowa Central”.

Yao is reported to have been made extremely welcome by his coach and team mates ; settled in very well and to be thoroughly enjoying his training. “This is cross country season and coach Curtis Vais is very happy with Sapolai’s progress, said Green. He has been improving with each race and everyone is looking forward to the Regional Championships at Marshaltown next month and the national Cross Country Championships at Ina , Illinois on November 10. Immediately following the cross country nationals, Yao will turn his attention to the National Junior College Half Marathon Championships at Levelland Texas on November

Coaching & Officiating Courses

Athletics PNG is to stage coaching and officiating courses in Kokopo prior to and following the PNG Games in November. The announcement follows the receipt of updated materials from Oceania Athletic Association for both the Oceania Technical Officials Scheme (OTOS) and the Oceania Basic Athletics Scheme (OBAS). President Tony Green said that the OTOS course would first be delivered to those local officials from East New Britain who will be officiating at the Games.

The OTOS course is flexible, and designed to be delivered in modules, so that those officiating in a specific area such as Jumps can be given an in depth training in the events which are of interest to them, rather than trying to cover a lot of other material which in practise they may never use.The course covers a number of general rules of the sport as well as those applicable to each module. “Athletic officials from outside ENB who attend the Games will also have an opportunity to attend the OTOS course during the PNG Games and an announcement will be made soon regarding the date”, added Green.

Milo Momase Athletic Championship

Over 150 athletes participated in a successful Milo Momase Athletic Championships held at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae last weekend.Teams travelled from Bulolo , Madang and the Markham Valley to join Lae based athletes for a good competition ahead of the PNG Games.Highlights of the competition were strong performances from Helen Philemon in the 100m , 200m and long Jump; a great mens 3000m race between Kupsy Bisamo and David Georasi and the return to form of triple jumper Mong Tavol.

PNG’s top distance runner Kupsy Bisamo was pushed all the way to the line in the 3000m by David Georasi, less well known brother of PNG Rep Andipas Georasi. Bisamo was rewarded with a personal best time of 9mins flat and Georasi ran a massive personal best of 9:01. “This is a very significant result for David, said Athletics PNG President Tony Green,adding that the pair will compete again later this week at the Highlands Championship at NSI in Goroka.

PNG Games

Athletics PNG has clarified its position with respect to the participation of its elite and other national squad athletes in the PNG Games, a matter which has caused some controversy in previous editions of the Games. The PNG Athletics Elite squad is considered to be Toea Wisil , Betty Burua , Sharon Kwarula, Mowen Boino , Nelson Stone, Kevin Kapmatana and Wala Gime. If any of these athletes attend the Games they will only be able to enter relay events, not individual events. All other national squad athletes may participate in the Games on the same basis as all other athletes, which means they may enter a maximum of two track events and one field event or vice versa (plus the relays). Athletics PNG President Tony Green said that in drawing up the policy the interests of all parties involved were considered. “No one wants to see an elite athlete running away with an event, but to rule out all national athletes was not in the best interests of the Games or of Athletics PNG he said. “ Everyone wants to see an improvement in the standard of the competition; and most national squad members don’t get anywhere near enough competition opportunities so it doesn’t help either cause to deny them the right to participate. The Games provide an incentive for national athletes to train seriously throughout 2012 and this will benefit our preparations for the 2013 Mini Pacific Games” Green added.

PNG Games Athletics Programme

Athletics PNG has published the list of events to be included in the PNG Games Athletics Programme. A full range of track and field events for men and women will be conducted , including sprint and intermediate hurdle races ; 3000m steeplechase ; hammer throw , heptathlon for women and an octathlon for men. There will also be a half marathon for men and women on the final day of the Games. A mens and womens Pole Vault will also be conducted as demonstration events, subject to the arrival of the necessary equipment in time for the Games. Demonstration means there will be no medals on offer, but anyone who wishes to try the event can have a go. The absence of a water jump means that the Steeplechase will be a modified version of the full event, with athletes still being required to clear a total of 35 hurdles in the race.

Stone delivers in London

Athletics PNG had more to celebrate today as Nelson Stone ran by far his best 400m of the year in the Olympic stadium. Running in heat three alongside one of Europe’s best 400m runners Jonathan Borlee of Belgium, Stone ran aggressively from the start and was rewarded with a great time of 46.71 secs, just one hundredth of a second outside his national record set in the Commonwealth Games two years ago.

The greatest day of Toea Wisil's life at Olympic stadium in London.

Toea Wisil had the greatest day of her life today in the Olympic Stadium in London. Having successfully negotiated the preliminary round of the 100m which all athletes who did not have a qualifying performance were required to participate in , Toea lined up in the first round proper against Allyson Felix of the United States.

Toea Wisil got the shock of her life this morning at the Dining Hall in the Olympic Village. She was quietly eating breakfast on her own when an American athlete politely asked if he could sit at the same table.

Wisil to be Team PNG Flag Bearer for Olympic Games - July 23, 2012

The PNG Sports Federation & Olympic Committee has announced the flag bearer for the 2012 London Olympic Games as Toea Wisil.

Toea is a two time winner and current SP Sports Award Female Athlete of the Year who is also the reigning Pacific Games Champion in the 100m, 200m and 400m. She also holds the national records for the 200m and 400m.

The selection as Team PNG flag bearer at the London Olympics adds another distinction to the increasingly impressive career of PNG’s current top female athlete. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, India, Wisil reached the 100m final, eventually finishing in fourth place. At the 2011 Noumea Pacific Games, Wisil was the undisputed queen of the track, claiming 5 gold medals in a dominant performance, completing the sprint treble. She then backed up to be a part of the victorious 4*100m and 4*400m relay teams.

Mowen Boino won the 400m hurdles at the Bedford International Games - May 20, 2012

Mowen Boino won the 400m hurdles at the Bedford International Games on Sunday June 10 in a time of 51.83 seconds. It was his second race in the UK since arriving on 16 May , and follows his second placing at Loughborough University on 20 May. Mowen is now looking forward to a stronger competition in Belgium on June 23 when he competes at the Nivelles EAP Meet.

Legendary Australian Marathon Runner Steve Moneghetti visits Athletics PNG

Legendary Australian Marathon Runner Steve Moneghetti will be the special guest speaker at the Athletics PNG 50th Anniversary Celebrations at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby on the evening of 12 May. A great evening of entertainment, celebration, a brief look back on the history of our athletes participation on the international scene ;and focus on the future is in store for guests at the function which will take the form of a cocktail party.
Moneghetti is a renowned motivational speaker and Athletics PNG is delighted to have secured his presence for this (special) great occasion, said President Tony Green. He thanked Athletics Australia President Rob Fildes for his assistance in facilitating the engagement of Moneghetti.
