The KISS (Keelboat Introduction to Sailing Savvy) program is lifting its pace to be ‘race ready’ for the inaugural KISS Passage Race and Rally on Saturday 30 July 2022.
For the 25 enthusiastic KISS participants who jumped on board on 17 May for the first webinar and were inspired by our panel of six newbies to experienced ocean goers, it will be their ‘rite of passage’ as they step up from passenger to participant taking on lead roles of Helm, Navigator and Radio Operator supported by boat owners, mentors and regular crew.
Not just for the KISS sailors, the event is open to any female sailors wanting to join in the fun and camaraderie as Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club celebrates its own ‘rite of passage’ with the success of the KISS program in increasing engagement and inclusion.
The KISS sailors will be ‘ready to race/rally’ with their preparation through the online webinars covering facing your fears, personal preparation, boat preparation including a Category 5 self audit, familiarisation with operating procedures and equipment with attention to preparation for Emergencies at sea and navigation. In the next month, the program will cover Weather, Tides and Passage Planning before the final Event briefing.
So to race or to rally?
There will be two divisions to accommodate all comers for the passage to QCYC.
- The Racing division will start off Altona at 0930hrs and race to Queenscliff on a prescribed course.
- The Rally division can commence their passage from their home club, choose their own start time as calculated in their passage plan and can use their engine if they deem necessary.
- Both divisions will be required to provide position reports to QCYC Race Management vessel RatRace at designated times or positions as listed in the sailing instructions.
Prizes will be awarded for the best performing female sailors in lead roles across the divisions:
1. 360Q KISS Passage Helm Trophy
For the best performed female helm in PHS in the racing division.
2. Searoad Ferries KISS Passage Navigators Trophy
For the best Log Book documentation amongst the nominated Navigators from all boats in the combined race and rally event
3. Queenscliff Maritime Museum KISS Passage Radio Operators Trophy
For the best marine radio protocols amongst the nominated Radio Operators from all boats in the combined race and rally event.
Thanks to our sponsors for their support with provision of perpetual trophies for the inaugural KISS Passage Event.
