HMAS Goorangai Trophy Race
The 38th HMAS Goorangai Memorial Trophy Race, held simultaneously with the Alan Robinson Memorial Race, started on time from the RBYC tower with blue skies and a fresh ESE wind averaging 22 knots. Caledonia (Paul Jenkins/Mal Mitchell) got a great start, but It's a Privilege (Peter Strain) was close behind as they crossed the channel. The seas were relatively flat until the fleet was closing in on the West Channel Pile, when the wind was averaging just over 26 knots making the seas a little lumpy.
However, after rounding the WCP, the sea flattened out and made it a quick reach down the West Channel to the finish line off Queenscliff, so quick in fact that Its a Privilege broke the records in winning both the HMAS Goorangai and the Alan Robinson taking just over two and a half hours for the race. All crews were unanimous in saying that it was a great sail!
Place-getters in the Goorangai were Caledonia second and DreamCatcher (Ian Staley) third, and in the Alan Robinson again Caledonia second and Boomaroo (Tom Hinton) third place.
Once again QCYC would like to thank the team from RBYC, GM Phil Hall, Club Captain Brett Heath, Sailing Admin. Chad Humphrey and the towering assistance of Peter Austen and Murray Cowdell for their efforts in getting the event up and running.
Mike Phelan Race Director.
