Commodore John Mooney writes that the Flag Officers and Committee were delighted that Yachting Victoria had honoured Peter for his contribution to Yachting
Below is a summary of the Club's submission to Yachting Victoria:
Queenscliff Cruising Yacht is a yacht club with over 500 memberships and 230 boats on the boat register. The club is run on an entirely volunteer basis. There are no paid employees at the club.
When Peter retired from his position as an intensive care physician at the University Hopsital of Geelong, he volunteered to take on the role as Honorary Secretary. The position would probably be better described as General Manager and Staff.
Peter immediately and enthusiastically launched into the role. Using his skills as a part time computer expert Peter continued the development of the club data base and set up a new website using the Australian Sailing model. The club now regularly sends to the members a newsletter, thereby keeping the membership well informed. He also introduced electronic payment for the wharfage and club functions (this task had previously been very onerous and taxing on the Committee.)
Peter also took on the role of Club Safety Officer ensuring that the Club was equipped with an up to date medical kit and defibrillator, incident reports etc. Peter was only recently relieved of the position of Safety Officer when Dr Mike Ackland joined the Committee. This freed him up somewhat and gave him the opportunity to lead the Committee in formulating and adopting our Child Protection Policy. Peter has also reviewed and updated many of the policies and by laws of the Club’s Constitution.
Peter has been involved in every aspect of the club including promotions, functions, coordinating events, looking after the banking, maintenance and so goes on the list. His efforts have assisted greatly in transforming the club into the modern functional club we have today.
It is difficult to put a value on the worth of volunteers. Perhaps it is suffice to say that you don’t know how you would function without them.
Peter also finds time to sail his yacht and race at RGYC and cruise Bass Strait with his wife Karen.
Additional Information
Peter has been a past Honoroary Secretary of the Victorian Laser Association, a Committee member of Indented Head Yacht Club and of the Royal Harwich Yacht club in the U.K., where he also coordinated junior week and helped teach young Optimist sailing members.
