Midweek update

Good Afternoon,

Please be advised of the latest information received this afternoon in a video meeting with Basketball WA, and their affiliated associations, around a return to play for basketball.

Basketball WA have worked tirelessly with the WA State Government and WA Health to advocate for the return of basketball, and they have tried to request an exemption for referees over the age of 12 to officiate without a mask (this to date has been unsuccessful), among other strategies put forward for the consideration of the authorities.

At the present time we are faced with three potential scenarios for this weekend, and all of the below are subject to the WA State Government’s announcement about what the next phase of restrictions will be. This is expected to become known either late on Thursday evening or Friday morning;

  1. If masks are still mandatory for indoor sporting stadiums; NBL1 and WABL competitions will be postponed.  WBA are working and liaising with all our key stakeholders to greater understand if we can play junior domestic basketball for players in U8, U10 and U12 this weekend, and an announcement will be made on Friday.  If masks are mandatory for players and referees then domestic games from U14 and above will not proceed.
  1. If approval is received for indoor sport to proceed with players and referees not wearing masks, where spectators will not be permitted into venues, under this scenario it would be envisaged that NBL1, WABL and potentially domestic competitions could resume, but without spectators in attendance at games and venues.
  2. Lastly, in the unlikely event that conditions do return to normal (no masks for players, referees, spectators) then all competitions will resume as per normal.

Once the new directions are announced, BWA and affiliated associations will meet ASAP to work thru what this means for this weekend and then I will convey our messaging via email, website and our social media channel

I thank you all for your support and patience and please if you are in the stadium this week do the right thing and wear your mask at all times as per the current directions.

Regards
