WBA Covid-19 Update

Dear WBA Community,

As you would all be aware in accordance with the Stay at Home and Closure (Perth, Peel, South West Regions) Directions, issued under the Emergency Management Act 2005, indoor sporting stadiums are not currently permitted to be open until 6pm on Friday, 5 February 2021.

The Premier recently announced a fourth day of no recorded cases of community transmission of COVID-19. This is obviously very pleasing and reassuring for all of us to hear.

The Premier also recently announced that COVID-19 related requirements for WA are currently under review. If we are fortunate enough to continue with no recorded cases of community transmission during the next 24 hours, it is anticipated that the lockdown period will conclude tomorrow at 6pm.

However, indications to date are that a relaxing of the lockdown period is likely to be a staged process, inclusive of a number of restrictions which will be imposed on the community to ensure a safe transition out of the lockdown period.

At WBA our priority is to resume our stadium operations promptly once we are granted permission to do so by the State Government and Basketball WA, but to do this we need to ensure the health and safety of all our stadium staff and patrons. Accordingly, it is imperative that we have the opportunity to greater understand all the restrictions that may be imposed to then ensure we can operate safely in accordance with the restrictions that are put in place.

It is anticipated that we will receive further advice from the State Government through our State Sporting Body (Basketball WA) late in the afternoon on Friday, 5 February 2021, or over this coming weekend, as to what a return to basketball looks like, and if in fact we will be able to resume operations as of next week.

As a result, and to give certainty to our WBA community, WBA has today made the decision to keep Willetton Stadium closed this weekend, meaning all competitions and activities are cancelled on Saturday, 6 February 2021 and Sunday, 7 February 2021.

I will make further contact with the WBA community by Monday. 8 February 2021, once the picture becomes clearer for our sport and stadium as to what a return to basketball looks like. I wish you all a happy and safe weekend.

Regards,

Mark Winnett

CEO - WBA
