WBA Announcement

PHIL NIXON CALLS TIME ON LEADERSHIP OF WILLETTON BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

After a period of sustained leadership of Willetton Basketball Association (WBA) current Chairman Phil Nixon recently advised the current board he will not be seeking renomination on to the board of WBA at the upcoming AGM of WBA on the 24th September 2020, effectively bringing to an end 21 years of service as Chair of the board of WBA.

Phil has been a committed volunteer and leader for WBA and Basketball in Western Australia in general over the past 23 years with his involvement at WBA. He commenced his volunteer service on the Representative Teams Committee whilst his children were playing basketball and it was from this initial involvement that his passion for the game of basketball started, never having played the sport.

Phil's general philsophy is that community sport is such a noble volunteering cause (especially children's sport) believing it is a major contributor to the health and wellbeing of every community.

Phil was instrumental in the required stadium refurbishment project in 2009 but most importantly after a sustained period of lobbying, negotiating and discussing with various levels of government and council, Phil was heavily involved in WBA securing the funding for the very recent $10m re-development of Willetton Stadium.

Phil and successive WBA boards were very determined over many years to provide more capacity to grow community basketball in our region of the Perth metro area.

Phil's voluntary involvement with basketball includes -

  • Chairperson of the U14 Boy's AJC Team Parent Group - 1997 & 1999
  • Committee Member then Chair of the Representative Teams Committee (RTC) - 1997-2004
  • Chairperson of Willetton Basketball Association Inc. - 1999-2020
  • Executive Committee Member of the Board of Basketball WA - 2000-2007
  • Member of Basketball Australia Board Nomination Committee - 2013-current
  • Member of Basketball Western Australia Board Nomination Committee - 2020 - current

"I have absolutely enjoyed my period of service within WBA and doing everything possible to make our great club even better" Phil said.

Now that the vision of the new stadium has been realised, Phil will be directing his energy elsewhere, wishing "the future Board and management well as WBA has a brilliant future with its long awaited capacity"
