Patience pays off for young Tigers

Willetton Tigers MSBL head coach Steve Black said the performances of young guns Travis Fee and Connor Mincherton were the highlight of last Saturday’s win against the Southwest Slammers.

The Tigers faced a double-header last weekend, losing to the Kalamunda Eastern Suns on Friday night before bouncing back with a win against the Slammers on Saturday.

Black said the win was a relief after a few disappointing losses this season.

“We have been very disappointing in our home games this season and hopefully the performance against Bunbury, while missing a considerable number of players, will be the catalyst for us to turn things around,” Black said.

“I think the group on Saturday began to focus on the things we believe can make us successful. We had some minor changes to our offensive structures, but our defence was much better than it has been, particularly given how much we have focused on it.”

Import Mo Barrow put on an impressive display of versatility, finishing with a team high 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Connor Mincherton and Travis Fee, both 18-years-old, also began to flex their potential in senior side, finishing with 19 points and 11 points respectively.

“Connor and Travis were excellent on Saturday and had been patiently waiting for their opportunity… Connor shoots the ball as well as anyone in the competition and Travis has composure that is beyond his years,” Black said.

“I think both of those qualities are things we have struggled with in the early part of the season, so it was great to see them translate their skills from a junior to a senior level and fill that void.”

The Tigers are heading into another double-header this weekend, starting with the East Perth Eagles this Friday at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

WSBL tip-off is at 6 30pm followed by the MSBL at 8 30pm.
