Tigers will learn from early loss

Willetton Tigers MSBL head coach Steve Black hopes that last weekend’s loss against Lakeside Lightening will provide some important lessons for the team going forward.

The Tigers went down 71-90 in their first home game for the season last Saturday.

However, Black is hopeful that the loss will be beneficial in the long run.

“It was a very disappointing performance that hopefully helps us better understand what we need to focus on to be successful,” Black said.

There were some positive signs on the night, including the performances of their new recruits Jackson Hussey (game high 27 points), Mo Barrow (8 points, 8 rebounds) and KG Hymon (6 points, 9 rebounds).

“I think Huss has been outstanding this far and we haven’t seen what Mo and KG are capable of yet… Mo can be a standout in the competition for us and KG as he gets his legs under him can be a game changer,” Black said.

Despite a disappointing result, 18-year-old Connor Mincherton impressed when he came off the bench to score two 3-pointers in the last four minutes of play.

Black said he sees a lot of potential in the younger players, including Travis Fee and Hamish Cummings.

“We are very proud and excited for the potential of the young guys we have,” Black said.

“Connor has been training very well, but we also think Travis can have an impact and Hamish also has a bright future.”

The Tigers will seek to bounce back when they take on the Kalamunda Eastern Suns this Friday night at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

WSBL tip-off is at 6 30pm followed by MSBL at 8 30pm.
