2018 April Coach's Corner

Coach’s Corner

Welcome to the first edition of Coach’s Corner. This newsletter is designed to bring Willetton coaches of all levels up to date with coaching issues, share information and bring together the coaching community. All feedback is welcome, especially around topics that you would like discussed and clinics that you have been to or would like to see in the future.

Currently the focus is on the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) teams who are getting ready to start the 2018 season on Sunday 29th April. Willetton have 28 teams participating in WABL from Under 12 through to Division 1 and have the greatest participation of all Associations. The coaches of these teams have been preparing since the State Championships at the end of last year.

The Willetton local competition is the best in Western Australia in terms of numbers participating, the level of competition and the organisation of the clubs. Development of coaches in the domestic league is vitally important for the competition to grow and for the players to reach their potential. There will be a number of initiatives throughout the year both within Willetton and in partnership with Basketball WA. Level 0 and level 1 coaching courses will be made available through the domestic clubs and there will be a number of clinics held on specific coaching themes. These will be promoted on the Willetton Website and through the clubs.

The Men’s and Women’s SBL teams are off and running and we are very fortunate to have two outstanding coaches in Stephen Black and Simon Parker (both Willetton Juniors) coaching these teams. These teams train at the stadium through the week, the Men on Tuesday night and the Women on Thursday night and coaches are most welcome to sit in the stands and watch the sessions even if you are coaching at a much lower level and younger players.

Over the next few months we will be adding to the resources on the Willetton Coaching Development page. At the moment the Willetton skills matrix is there which can be used as a checklist for coaches looking to see where the skill development of their players sits and the progression of skill development through the age groups. Basketball Australia also has a number of development videos and drills that can be accessed. These are available at http://coach.basketball.net.au/resources/

The Perth Lynx have an agreement with Basketball WA and the affiliated clubs to provide coach and player development. These events will be published on the Willetton and Perth Lynx websites and will be advertised throughout the stadium. Please take advantage of all these opportunities.

Finally all the best for the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) teams that start this Sunday.

Alan Black

Willetton Coaching Development Officer

That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand.
