SBL Review - Round 2.

The Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers Women’s SBL team continued their flawless start to the season with an impressive 79 to 68 win over last year’s premiers The Perry Lakes Hawks.

After a tightly contested and aggressive first half in which Perry Lakes outscored the Tigers 28 to 26 the Tigers pushed on in the second half behind some amazing shooting by Mel Marsh, who’s accurate third quarter propelled the Tigers into the lead. Netting 5 out of 9 three pointers for the game, Marsh scored 20 points in the second half to add to her 9 first half points. Marsh capped off her amazing game with 8 assists.

The Hawks also had no answer for Rebecca Duke, dominant in the paint, scoring 19 points alongside an impressive 18 rebounds.  17 of Duke’s points came in the second half to ensure that Perry Lakes had their hands full after the half time interval.

Point Guard Kate Malpass put a scare through the Tigers camp after going down hard after a rebound and clutching both legs, but the injury turned out to be a double leg cramp which was treated before she returned in the third quarter.

The Tiger Women are now a fantastic 3 wins and no losses for the season.

The Men’s squad were not so lucky, going down 102 to 90.

The Tigers Men suffered from an extremely sluggish start, only scoring 10 points in the first quarter. As the ball just would not find the net, the Hawks were catching fire, netting countless out side shots and capitalizing on transition to form a 27 point advantage at half time.

To coach Simon Parker’s credit though, the Tigers never quit, and behind some impressive scoring from Robert Epps (26 points, 11 rebounds) and Ben Hunt (24 points) the Tigers battled back to be only 9 points behind in the final period. But the damage had been done, and with a balanced attack, the Hawks were able to keep the Tigers at bay, with a comfortable 12 point win.

Come and see the Tigers this Saturday the 12th of April, as they play the Perth Redbacks at the Willetton Basketball Stadium. The Women tip off at 6pm and the Men are at 8pm. See you at the game!
