Volunteer of the Month: Brock Halliday

Our volunteer of the month for November is Brock Halliday. Long time manager and friend of the Willetton Tigers.

When and how did you get involved with Willetton Basketball?

I had just started to attend some SBL games when I met Shamus Ballantyne, Mark Herron and Clint Read at a Wildcats award dinner, I got to know the team and started going to games regularly. I eventually asked Jim Ballantyne who  the manager at the time if I could help out on the bench, I was hooked and have been co manager ever since. My first official year was in 2002

What are your activities and what do they involve (around Willetton)?

Well with the team obviously help as much as I can on game nights like making sure the players and coaches have water, sweat towels, attending to small injuries, I too attend most training sessions to help out where I can.

What motivates you to stay involved?

Well I love the game of basketball for starters, the other is the people. Many know I haven’t had an easy life and when I came to Willetton it was the first time I really felt like I belonged there, that I was accepted. Willetton is my second family I just can’t imagine not being here, I love helping out with the men’s team and I love the club.

 Why do you volunteer?

Like I said I just love it, I have thought about moving on but can’t, this club saved me and I just want to do as much as I can in return.

Of what contribution or achievement are you most proud?

Obviously winning our first grand Final in 2010 was a proud moment, I’m always proud to be a part of the team whatever may come. It also was pretty exciting to be in the grand final in my first season that memory sticks.

What do you hope the organization will achieve in the near future? Long term?

Well would be nice to see the Men’s and Women’s SBL team get some more Champion banners up, the club always does well in the WABL league so I hope that continues. I am glad to hear serious talk about the stadium expansion and hope that all goes well with the clubs plan.

Does anyone in your life play a role in supporting your involvement? Providing Inspiration?

My Mother June has played a massive roll, as I can’t drive she has always been my personal taxi to and from games, training ect, and offcourse having her as co-manager for the past 7 years has been great. And Jim and Shamus B I feel I owe a lot to.

Do you have an anecdote about this organisation that really moved you?

Some years ago I was awarded the Chris Purdie encouragement award that touched my heart.

What other organisations or causes do you support?

I have been a member of the Perth Wildcats for over 20 years and still support the team, have been a member of the Perth Lynx/West coast Waves since they re entered the WNBL.

Do you have a message to share?

Just thank you to all who have made my stay at Tiger land so enjoyable and I hope we have many more years together.
