Please sign our petition!

Petitions are available to sign in the canteen, the physio, the offices. If you're a friend of Willetton Basketball Stadium, please sign the petition.

Further details of how you can help make the stadium court expansion a success:

  1. Many of the councillor candidates are keen to run with this issue in the 17/10/15 election.  We encourage all our rate paying patrons within the City of Canning to vote for those councillors who pledge their immediate support to our project.
  2. We will make known those councillors who commit to our project so you can approach and support your respective candidates.
  3. SIGN THE PETITION – even if you’re not a Canning ratepayer, but as a member of our basketball club, and a frequent user of our stadium.  The petition will be helpful for our overall funding applications.

There may be other ways you can help during this election phase – we will advise in due course.

Please communicate this message to any and every City of Canning ratepayer you know and urge them to vote in the election on 17/10/15.  Your club’s best interests are linked to seeing the City of Canning immediately commit to our expansion project once the newly elected Council is formed.

Background:

1.     The owner of the stadium is the City of Canning – we have exclusive tenancy rights as WBA Inc.  We jointly funded its construction in 1985 and have fully maintained the building ever since.

2.     The independent feasibility study (jointly funded by DSR, City of Canning and ourselves) is complete and fully justifies the expansion to at least 4 more courts.

3.     The WA Govt is ready to support the project, as is the Federal Govt through a special grants program. Given the timing of the Federal grants program, this is a critical period in funding opportunities for the expansion of the stadium. Unfortunately we have been unable to gain the firm commitment required from the City of Canning for our expansion project as yet.

4.     A condition of Federal and State funding is an equitable contribution from the City of Canning (as owners of the stadium).

5.     The only way we have any chance of moving forward with the help of Federal funding is to convince the City of Canning to adjust their priorities through the newly elected council (on 17/10/15). This means voting for candidates who pledge immediate support for our project once the new council is formed.

6.     The next round of applications for the limited Federal funding (where we are eligible for up to 50% of the project cost) is in December 2015.  It is critical for the City of Canning to commit to the project before we submit an application in that round of funding. If we miss this opportunity for Federal funding, our expansion project may struggle to eventuate.
