EKBA Finals Day 2016

On Saturday 23rd April the East Kent Basketball Association will be hosting its 2016 Finals Day where the season culminates with four finals in what promises to be a fantastic day of basketball.

The first final of the day is the Women’s 3rd/4th place Grove Cup play-off between Canterbury Christ Church University and Herne Bay. Although tied on points with University of Kent, Herne Bay finished 3rd in the league with an 8-4 record, narrowly missing out on 2nd due to the aggregate score, whilst Christchurch finished in sixth place (2-10). However, Christ Church’s form dramatically improved in the second half of the season, and they put an excellent run together in the play offs to make their appearance in the finals day.

The second game is the Adams Plate Final which sees Ashford Outlaws line up against the University of Kent. Ashford finished 5th in the league with a 9-9 record and defeated Herne Bay in a pulsating semi-final by just one basket (80-78). The University of Kent, who finished in 4th place faced Ashford in the last game of the regular season and won a hard fought game    70-74. The final promises to be a great re-match.

The third match is a repeat of last season’s Grove Cup Final between League Champions Canterbury Crusaders and University of Kent (UKC). Crusaders were unbeaten all season taking the title for the third consecutive year. Having also won the Cup in the previous two years they are looking to retain the Grove Cup in order to achieve a ‘Three-peat’. League runners up UKC will undoubtedly be looking to stop their local rivals and have an accomplished squad of players who are capable of causing an upset. Defence will be key to the game. UKC finished the season having conceded 357 points, better than Crusaders who conceded 365.

The final game is the Adrian Cook Cup Final which will see a new name on the trophy. Whitstable, who last won the cup in 2010, beat the Cup holders Folkestone Saints 93-62 their semi-final. Whitstable finished the season as Champions with 17-1 record. However Canterbury Invicta, who finished 3rd in the league with an 11-7 record, inflicted what would have been Whitstable’s second defeat, only to see it revoked having fielded an unregistered player. That player is now registered and on their day they have the capability of beating anyone. Can they upset the favourites?

We hope to see you there!
