AFL Goulburn Murray is delighted to announce the players selected for the second year of the Tatura Milk AFL Goulburn Murray Youth Development Academy.
With training bases at Kialla, Congupna, Rochester and Echuca, the addition of an Under 13 age group has also necessitated the appointment of some fantastic new coaches to this season’s program.
The Kialla U13 squad will be coached by 2016 AFL Victoria State Coach of The Year, Phil Guthrie. He will be ably assisted by Jamie Atkinson and Damien Saxon. The Rochester based U13 training squad will be mentored by Dylan Cuttriss and Todd Woodfine. Katandra U17 Premiership coach, Ross Opie, also joins the Under 14 panel in Shepparton, whilst current Rochester Football Club senior footballer, Mitch Bright will lend his assistance to Phil Evans as the newly appointed coaches of the Under 14 group based at Echuca.
AFL Goulburn Murray Football Development Manager, Trevor Mellington is delighted with the appointments.
“It is a fantastic outcome for the Youth of our region to be able to attract such high quality applicants to these positions” he said.
“To have such a wonderful mix of experience in terms of coaching at a high level, outstanding former players and up and coming development coaches is a perfect outcome.”
“We are committed to facilitating a coaching pathway as well as a development Academy for players. As an example, Damian Sexton, who headed up the U15 group in 2016 has moved on to a senior coaching position with Yarrawonga FC.”
“To have coaches involved that possess experience at TAC Cup along with high level playing exposure means that this experience, knowledge and passion can be shared with fellow coaches and the playing group.”
“Retained coaches from the 2016 program include: Cameron Stewart, Luke Moodie, Stephen Ash, Brett Warburton and Daryl Chalcraft and these people will be instrumental in mentoring the new appointments.”
“The 2017 Academy coaches have combined to spend countless hours scouring the entire Goulburn Murray region identifying the best talent to be invited to this year’s program.”
“Performances at all of club, inter league, finals, lightning premierships and other representative competitions were considered to finalise the eventual Academy list.”
“We all recognise that selection processes are never an exact science. However, our coaches have done an outstanding job at trying to sift through all of the available data and observations to put together lists which they believe best reflect the depth and breadth of talent across the whole of the Goulburn Murray.”
“The 2017 program will commence the week of 27 February with the parent induction program and some testing procedures facilitated by Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers TAC CUP High Performance staff.”
