Trevor Mellington provides a snapshot of development activities across the past month.
- Stage One of Club Improvement Program has been completed with Stage two to be launched in the coming weeks
- Support provided at Junior Finals and Lightning Premierships. Specifically Seymour DJFNL, Shepparton DJFL and Goulburn Campaspe JFL.
- Senior League Finals have kicked off and FDM’s are providing support to Leagues at these.
- Final visits from the Goulburn Murray Region with respect to our Auskick Rules & Grid games during half time of matches at Etihad Stadium & the MCG have wound up with an "all girls" group having the opportunity to represent the region at the Round 23 clash between Carlton and Essendon. These girls are a combined team from Echuca United and Thornton Eildon.
- Final planning for the various Vote counts and Presentation Nights across all of the leagues administered by AFL GM has been keeping everyone busy with the first of these being the Shepparton DJFL and Seymour DFNL on Monday 22nd August and the Goulburn Campaspe JFL on Friday 26th August.
- Holiday programs at Kyabram & Shepparton are scheduled for the 3rd term holidays on September 20th & September 22nd respectively.
- Appointments of coaches for the addition of an U13 Age group with the Tatura Milk AFL GM Youth Academy have taken place. Phil Guthrie, Jamie Atkinson and Damien Saxon will take the lead for the Shepparton based Academy. Dylan Cuttriss and Todd Woodfine will lead the way with players from the Campaspe teams in the region.
- St Mary’s Nathalia/Nathalia SC were the winners of our annual Sun Country Cup final against Catholic College Wodonga, with the Anthony Stevens medal for BOG being awarded to Nathan Oakes from St Mary’s of The Angels.
- Notre Dame College were very unlucky losers to Trinity College Colac in their semi-final of the Sun Country Shield. Kyle Clark was the recipient of the Shannon Byrnes medal for the best Notre Dame College player in this game.
- Sporting Schools Program (SSP) continues to grow with more schools coming on board. Mark Lambourn has specifically been delivering programs at Congupna PS as well as an AFL 9’s program at Notre Dame College. Students involved in this program will ultimately assist Mark in the running and delivery of the Primary School AFL 9’s Cluster Day at Congupna on 1st September
- The Shepparton Women’s team had a very narrow loss in the Preliminary final to wind up an amazing inaugural year for the club. Brittany Tancred, who has a long history of involvement in female football across the Goulburn Murray, has done a tremendous job as coach this year.
- Primary Schools boys football was held in Moama for the Campaspe Cluster schools. Winners were Echuca Primary School (Division 1) and Lockington (Division 2). Echuca Primary School progressed through regional competition to ultimately finish third in the state – congratulations on a mighty effort.
- Echuca East Primary School won the annual Campaspe Primary Schools Girls Football competition for the third successive year.
- Zane Barzen from Shepparton United was selected in the AIS Academy Level 1 program on the basis of his strong performances for AFL Victoria Country in the Under 16 Nationals.
- Under 15 AFL GM Academy members participated in Bendigo Pioneers selection trials at Bendigo with the following boys making the final team to represent the Bendigo Pioneers at the V-Line Cup in Gippsland: Brodie Kemp, Kobe Poulton, Jackson Stewart, Harry Dent, Ash Dewinne, Matt Lias, Cooper Vick, Aiden Robinson, Riley Ironside, Dylan Oaff, (Rochester), Charlie Hinks (Lockington), (Callum Doyle (Moama) was named an emergency.
- Selections for the AFL Goulburn Murray V-Line Cup teams is ongoing with trials and training occuring at Congupna.
- Cameron Farrar from the Echuca Moama United Rockets senior team was successful in being selected for the Victoria Country side that competed at the All Abilities Inclusion National Championships recently in Melbourne.
- Mark Lambourn has been busy preparing students from Sirius College to compete in a Multicultural tournament in Melbourne on 19th October
- Social AFL 9’s is all set to kick off again on 12th October. Any interested people or teams can enquire through the Goulburn Murray office (58239800).
- Preparations are well underway for the annual Goulburn Murray Coaches Association dinner to be held at Barooga on Wednesday 5th October. Anyone who might like more information or would like to purchase tickets can contact Greg Liddell on 58239803.
- A group of very enthusiastic Multicultural students has been attending the Umpire Diverse Academy with a view to umpiring in the region in the future.
- Shepparton (and AFL Goulburn Murray) will play host to the Youth Girls Indigenous and Multicultural National Diversity Championships in the second week of the school holidays.
- The transition of the cluster Primary School divisions in the Shepparton DJFL has been a resounding success in it’s inaugural year.
- The initial stages of a "whole of region" Junior review looking at the best way of moving forwards in to the future has been launched and will be ongoing over the next 12 months.
