Women’s football is coming to Shepparton after a meeting was held last week to determine the interest and support in fielding a team in Season 2016, with enough interest to proceed.
The Shepparton Bears Women’s Football Team is the first open age women’s football team in the Goulburn Valley and will play in the West Division of the Victorian Women’s Football League. The other teams in the division include Glen Orden, Roxburgh Park, Melton, Manor Lakes, Fitzroy and Jacana.
Brittany Tancred has been appointed coach of the team. She has previous experience coaching female football having coached local youth girl’s teams Shepparton Notre Dame and Mooroopna.
Players are being called upon to put their hand up to be part of the first women’s football team in the region.
"This is an exciting step for women’s football in the GV," Valley Sport Program Manager Megan Carr said, "Valley Sport was happy to partner with AFL Goulburn Murray and the Shepparton Bears to support increasing female participation across the region."
"This provides a great opportunity for women in the GV to play AFL football. Women’s football is growing and with a new women’s national competition planned for 2017, it is clear there is a demand for opportunities to play," AFL Goulburn Murray Football Development Manager, Trevor Mellington said,
"After working with the Youth Girls Academy, it’s good to see this opportunity become available for open women."
Coach Brittany Tancred is calling for any females interested in having a go to come to the Season Launch.
"It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played before, we’re looking for a few more girls to fill the team. We’ll provide support and instruction in a fun environment."
The club’s home games will be at the Emmaus Campus, and are currently training at Kialla Recreation Reserve with the GV Giants Masters team. A working party has been established to support the team.
A Season Launch and Registration Night will be held on Wednesday 9th March at St Brendan’s Football Oval on Corio Avenue. Training will commence at 5.45pm with registrations from 7pm. Anyone interested in being involved at the club is invited to come along.
