The Shepparton District Junior Football League held its AGM on 30 November with a successful year highlighted with key milestones achieved and recognised.
The 2016 Executive was elected unopposed, two long serving members were recognised, the League’s first ever dividend to clubs was announced and the SDJFL Primary School Recommendations were fully endorsed and passed in what was a landmark meeting.
Chris Thomas returns as League President with Andrew Sneyd as his Deputy. Mooroopna’s Mick Betson was also elected to the Executive to replace John Byrnes, who has stepped down after 10 years as a key contributor in many areas. Jason Ritchie and Peter Trevaskis were also elected to the expanded Executive as the first step in the implementation of the Primary School Review recommendations.
All of the 16 Review recommendations were endorsed by all clubs with four significant changes to be put into place for the 2016 season:
1. A revamped governance structure will provide for two places for the Junior Division at the table of the SDJFL Executive
2. The Primary School Competition will be rebadged as ‘Junior Division’ and U10 and U12 age groups will replace the current Divisional structure. The U14 and U16 competition will be called the ‘Youth Division
3. The primary schools in Shepparton will be consolidated into ‘clusters’ to enable children to participate in an age appropriate way and to consolidate volunteer workloads. The set up of each cluster will be supported by a Mentor who will guide schools through the process
4. The AFL Junior Match Policy guidelines will be adopted with a couple of local modifications
Two long serving club and league volunteers were also recognised at the meeting. Andrew Sneyd and Michael Betson have both been members of the SDJFL for more than 7 years as Club Delegates with Andrew joining the League Executive in 2011. Both were presented with ‘Recognition of Service’ Awards at the meeting.
For the first time in its history the League also announced that each club will receive a dividend which will be credited to their account for 2016.
