A leadership program with Notre Dame College will bear fruit on Tuesday 15 September with Year 10 and 11 schools students taking on management roles for an AFL 9s Primary School Carnival at Katandra West Recreation Reserve.
Over 200 students from Dookie, Currawa, Invergordon, Zeerust, Katamatite, Katandra West and Lemnos Primary Schools will participate in a footy frenzy of AFL 9s and activities with Notre Dame students lending a hand as part of a curriculum program partnership between the school and AFL Goulburn Murray.
AFL Goulburn Murray Football Development Manager Mark Lambourn has been impressed by the willingness of the secondary school students to be involved.
"Year 10 and 11 students have been trained over the past six weeks and will manage various aspects of the day including coaching, umpiring, event management and administration" he said.
"The Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6 students will all play in AFL 9s competitions and the Preps and Grades 1/2 will be involved in modified games and activities with an Aussie Rules flavour."
"The Primary Schools have been really supportive of the concept and are excited at the opportunity to be involved."
Notre Dame’s Claire Doherty has already seen the growth and development of her students during the program.
"It’s been a fantastic practical opportunity for students to develop and demonstrate their leadership skills and then to deliver such a big event" she said.
"Students have embraced the responsibility and from an educational perspective this program is an important assessment tool against our curriculum."
"I’m really looking forward to seeing our students in action after all of their recent preparation and am also excited that we, as a school, are able to provide participation opportunities for young children."
