In a joint venture AFL Goulburn Murray and the Greater Shepparton City Council have secured the prestigious Victoria Country v Victoria Metro (The Lawrie Evans Memorial Match) Masters game to be played at Deakin Reserve on Saturday 6 June.
The annual clash, now in its 15th year sees the best of the country Victoria’s Masters players against the best of Metro Melbourne. To qualify for Masters competitions participants must be over the age of 35 years.
The game will be played under lights at Deakin Reserve and will start at the conclusion of the Shepparton United v Euroa senior GOTAFE GVFL match.
Victoria Country President Wayne Hall sees this feature match as an opportunity to profile and grow Masters football in the Goulburn Murray.
"This annual event is an important one on our calendar as it profiles the best in Victoria against each other" he said.
"Representing your State is a big honour and the players certainly respect their opportunity and will be keen to continue the strong Country v Metro rivalry."
"Naturally the competition can be pretty fierce on the field but it is also a great social environment and both teams will take the opportunity to mix and enjoy each other’s company over the long weekend in Shepparton."
"Echuca are our only team in the Goulburn Murray at the moment and we would also love to see a Masters team set up in Shepparton in the future."
"Therefore we encourage any interested players and supporters to come along and have a look and catch up with us there to have a chat about the game and how it is played."
