For the past few weeks Tatura’s Bob Boyer and Mooroopna’s John Gledhill have been working overtime to put together ‘the Lions’, a composite team to play in this season’s Shepparton District Junior Football League (SDJFL) U16 Division 2.
Both Mooroopna and Tatura have excess numbers for their U16 Division 1 teams but not enough players to field a second team. With the SDJFL capping player lists to a maximum of 25 players a number of players from both clubs were looking at walking away from the game.
SDJFL President Chris Thomas welcomed the new initiative.
"We are delighted to see an opportunity to provide a game for another team of players, following fruitful discussions between the two clubs" he said.
"The Lions is a neutral team and will provide an opportunity for players who have missed out on getting a game with either Tatura or Mooroopna."
"Some of the players outside the selected squad have moved into the KDFNL U18s but due to their age most others were faced with the prospect of not playing at all."
"Both clubs should be recognised for their enthusiasm and work in coming together in a co-operative spirit."
"An MOU has been put in place and the registration process investigated to ensure the team and players comply with AFL Vic Country rules and regulations."
"Players will still train with their ‘home’ club but will line up for the Lions on match day."
"This is an exciting and innovative development aimed at providing a meaningful playing opportunity for more players in our local area."
"The team will take to the field for their first game this weekend."
