Gillon McLachlan To Launch Umpire Diversity Academy
AFL Chief Executive Officer Gillon McLachlan will formally launch Shepparton’s Umpire Diversity Academy at Kialla Park Recreation Reserve next Wednesday 6 May at 5pm.
The Academy, which has been running for the past three weeks at Shepparton High School, consists of participants from multicultural backgrounds selected from Shepparton High School, Maguire College and Wanganui Park Secondary College.
"The AFL is focused on increasing the number of umpires from Multicultural backgrounds" commented McLachlan. "We know that by diversifying umpiring groups there will be greater recruitment opportunities for field, goal and boundary umpires."
"This commitment is delivering initiatives that will offer opportunities for people from multicultural backgrounds to embrace a crucial part of our great game."
"As well as being a new initiative promoting umpiring in the local multicultural community the Academy program also encourages a pathway into community football."
"This is the first regional academy of its kind in Australia and it is fantastic to see a strong response from the students in Shepparton."
"I look forward to the participants graduating from the program and hopefully going on to umpire at community level."
