Ex AFL star Glen Manton is all set to tell his story on Wednesday 29 April at the Man Up event at Eastbank Centre, Shepparton commencing at 6:30pm.
Manton, a member of the AFL’s 200 Club and Carlton’s 1995 Premiership, is the key note speaker at next week’s event which is being presented in partnership by headspace Shepparton, AFL Goulburn Murray and Valley Sport.
Manton will be joined by Dr Steve Leicester, Head of Direct Clinical Services at headspace Australia and ex Geelong footballer Simon Hogan in a seminar which will cover mental health, alcohol and drugs and other societal issues all within a framework of how you can look after your mates.
In addition to his football career Manton has co-founded Whitelion, a not for profit organisation to support youth in need, obtained a degree in Education and has established himself as one of Australia’s most regarded adolescent speakers, motivators and mentors.
"I’m really looking forward to coming to Shepparton to be a part of this important event" he commented. "The themes of Man Up cover important conversations that need to be had about looking out for your mates and encouraging people to seek help if they need to."
"Issues in the community are naturally reflected in sporting clubs so it is important to provide players and volunteers information and education on how they can seek help and support in a time of need."
"The sporting club environment also provides the ideal community infrastructure with friendships, a sense of belonging, health and wellbeing all enhanced by community sport participation. Man Up will also celebrate this."
"The message of ‘Its ok to not be ok’ is an important one as the community is increasingly confronted with mental health issues, drug and alcohol dependencies and high risk taking behaviour that put young people at risk."
"I am looking forward to sharing my stories from my AFL days but also from my own life outside football and from my work as an educator, mentor and motivator to youth and those in need."
