Shepparton United’s Kyle Clark, Katandra’s Rhys Damon and Matthew Walker from Savernake have all earned selection in the National Indigenous U15 squad known as the Flying Boomerangs.
The three locals are amongst seven Victorians selected after dominating performances for the Vic/Tas team who were runners-up at the National Diversity Championships in Cairns last week.
The Boomerangs, which have helped launch the careers of several current AFL stars, including Melbourne livewire Jay Kennedy-Harris, will take on the World Team in a series of matches at the U16 National Championships later this year.
Despite a slow start to the week-long tournament of games against other U15 Indigenous sides from around Australia, Vic/Tas rattled home to force its way into the grand final.
Unfortunately, a fairy tale finish wasn’t to be with Western Australia proving too strong in the decider.
AFL Victoria Indigenous Programs Manager Aaron Clark said the boys were disappointed not to come away with the trophy but could hold their heads up high for the way in which they represented Victoria and Tasmania.
"Winning is really only a small part of what this week represents with the boys walking away with new friendships from all over the country, a stronger understanding of their cultural heritage and a great insight into elite level football," Clark said.
"The Indigenous Programs we run at AFL Victoria, and nationally, give the boys access to respected role models, fast-tracks their football development, and offers an opportunity to boost their self-confidence."
"Their attitude throughout the week, given that they are far removed their comfort zone, was outstanding and we look forward to watching these guys progress through our programs and the mainstream talent pathway."
