The new season of Shepparton’s AFL 9s competition kicks off this Wednesday evening at Kialla Park Community & Sports Centre.
The mixed competition will run each Wednesday evening for ten weeks with the finals to be played on Wednesday 17 December.
Last year’s champions ‘Launch It’ return and have already laid claims on their intention to go back to back. They will be joined by a mixture of social teams, a local footy club parents and kids combination and the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association.
AFL 9s is the newest format of Australia’s Game. With opportunities for both males and females of all ages and abilities to participate, and with ‘touch football’ style rules, the competition provides the perfect combination of fun and fitness.
"The AFL 9s concept is quickly growing in popularity" noted AFL Goulburn Murray Football Development Manager Mark Lambourn "last year’s competition was a lot of fun and the format was very well received by the players."
"The nature of the rules allows for the skills of the game to be featured whilst providing a fun and inclusive environment for all ability levels to be involved."
Competition Manager Connor Green is looking forward to getting the competition underway "each team will play each week with games taking 40 minutes to complete" he said.
"We are expecting the competition to be pretty even and AFL 9s is a perfect way to stay in touch with footy during the summer whilst maintaining fitness and friendships."
With a ‘pay as you go’ philosophy last minute team entries are still being received.
