AFL Goulburn Murray Multicultural Development Officer Tong Tong is being seconded to the North Melbourne Football Club next week to work in ‘The Huddle’.
The 19 year old Tong, who is a developing ruckman at Shepparton Bears, will spend a week working in multicultural focused programs which are run by the Kangaroos as well as a mentoring opportunity with AFL Victoria’s Multicultural Projects Officer David Rodan.
"This will be a great experience for Tong to work with The Huddle’s programs" identified AFL Victoria’s Engagement Manager Xavier Moloney. "The Huddle has a very strong community development focus in Multicultural communities and, as well as contributing to the programs, Tong will be a role model for the children and adults within them."
"His work will include assisting with the delivery of school based programs, coaching support with the All Nations program run by David Rodan, a school clinic with international University students at Melbourne University and an interactive AFL introductory session with the Adult Migration Education Services."
"It will be an action packed experience for Tong with his work leading into the AFL Multicultural Round" added AFL Goulburn Murray Region General Manager Martin Gleeson. "He has been gaining valuable experience over the past couple of weeks working in our School Holiday Programs and this secondment will only help to fast track his development skills"
"As an added bonus Tong will train with VFL team Williamstown on Tuesday night and University Blacks on Thursday night to value add his own football development."
"We are very grateful for the support of the North Melbourne Football Club for this initiative as well as Xavier Moloney’s support, not only for this activity but also for the recent Refugee Week clinic and Multicultural Gala Day initiatives."
Background – The Huddle
The Huddle is a joint initiative of the North Melbourne Football Club, the Scanlon Foundation, and the Australian Multicultural Foundation.
Established in 2010 to improve social cohesion by systematically addressing the causes of disengagement among young people, The Huddle’s programs target youths from migrant and refugee backgrounds, in North Melbourne, Flemington, Kensington, West Melbourne and the City of Wyndham.
The Huddle programs have the capacity to reach more than 25,000 people in any given year and programs are developed and delivered by teaching staff, in conjunction with the North Melbourne playing group and young people from the local community. Technology, sport, positive education, team building, mentoring and role models are used to challenge and engage, to create active community participants and to develop young people into leaders.
