Over fifty Goulburn Murray regional coaches turned out at Kialla Park Community Centre on Monday night in an effort to build some momentum around facilitating greater information sharing and networking across our coaching community.
Coaching legend, Stan Alves was the keynote speaker and he challenged those present to identify their main motivation and reasons for coaching. He presented much of his philosophy around coaching and focussed on the need to remove winning from the equation when coaching junior footballers in particular.
Echuca United Coach, Scott Beattie spoke in depth about a mentoring program that he has introduced at his club. He emphasised the importance of the Football Club in the lives of many young people and the responsibility that clubs have in contributing to the broader community. Scott touched on the formation of the "Community Against Drugs" group that has been operating in Echuca and his integral role in facilitating the formation of that group.
Murchison Coach, Steve Reeves shared his personal and club philosophy around recruitment and retention of players. He spoke of the need to have a plan and stick to it to ensure that recruitment strategies are clear.
Steve encouraged all clubs to utilise their own player network to assist with recruitment as they are often the most knowledgeable about players from other areas.
Finley coach, Damian Sexton shared his vast knowledge as a Senior coach for the past 14 years and he compared and contrasted this with his experiences from last year as Finley Under 14 coach, Victoria Country Under 19 coach, Finley School coach and Murray FL Under 18 Coach. Damian shared some wonderful insights as to how he managed to juggle these various hats whilst maintaining his passion and enthusiasm for coaching.
Those in attendance then had a brief Q & A with the four speakers in a panel format before the whole group spent time networking, sharing phone numbers/emails and analysing the night as a whole.
It is hoped that this night will be the impetus for future coaching seminars that continues to foster and facilitate a culture of collegiality and networking amongst all Goulburn Murray Coaches Association members.
