Aussie Rules star Brian Lake, former Australian netballer Sharelle McMahon and Opal’s basketballer Liz Cambage are joining the hoards of people getting in to the fun of Cadbury AFL 9s across Victoria.
The newest format of Australia’s Game is set to be the hottest social sport this summer with Riverside Plaza bringing the exciting new format to Shepparton.
With opportunities for both males and females of all ages and abilities to participate, and with ‘touch football’ style rules, Cadbury AFL 9s is designed to provide the perfect combination of fun and fitness.
Hawthorn Premiership player and 2013 Norm Smith Medalist Brian Lake loved his first foray in to Cadbury AFL 9s, highlighting it as the best to stay in shape in the off-season while also having a laugh with your friends.
"Following on from this year’s Grand Final I haven’t played a lot of football, so I really enjoyed the chance to run around on the smaller Cadbury AFL 9s field," Lake said.
"You can kick goals, lay off a quick handball and take a diving mark on a much smaller version of an AFL field making it the perfect social match regardless of your fitness level."
Also on board as a Cadbury AFL 9s ambassador is mother of one and former Australian netball star Sharelle McMahon, who joined current Tulsa Shock basketballer Liz Cambage in swapping sports for the day.
After playing their first match, McMahon said Cadbury AFL 9s was a great summer sport for people looking for a fun social way of keeping fit.
"It doesn’t matter if you have never kicked a ball in your life, it’s just a great way to have fun and stay fit over summer," McMahon said.
Cambage agreed after loving her switch from the court to the football field. "Playing AFL 9s is such fun and a great way to learn how to kick a footy. The rules are really simple and designed so anyone can play," she said.
AFL Victoria General Manager Grant Williams said he was delighted to welcome Lake, McMahon and Cambage to the team as ambassadors for the Cadbury AFL 9s summer season.
"Brian, Liz and Sharelle joined some of our AFL Victoria staff for a game of Cadbury AFL 9s and clearly had a lot of fun learning to play the great variation of Australian football.
"Hopefully they will inspire Victorians of all ages and fitness abilities to give Cadbury AFL 9s a go this summer," he said.
Individuals and teams are encouraged to register by Wednesday 6 November to go into the draw to win the ultimate Cadbury AFL 9s ‘money can’t buy experience’.
Two lucky teams will play a game of 9s during half time of the 2014 Toyota AFL Premiership Season at either the MCG or Etihad Stadium.
The Riverside Plaza AFL 9s seven week season starts Wednesday 6 November at Kialla Park Recreation Reserve.
