Shepparton District Junior Football League held a forum on Wednesday 5 June to discuss the progress of the region’s first Youth Girls football league which commenced in May.
Following from the League’s first female inter-league team’s rousing victory against Bendigo Junior FL three days prior, the forum involved all participating clubs, members of the SDJFL executive, umpires and AFL Goulburn Murray and was held at the AFL Goulburn Murray offices at Kialla Park Community Centre.
The SDJFL Youth Girls competition is for 14-18 year old girls and is the perfect pathway opportunity for girls coming out of junior boys football or are interested in playing in a safe and participation friendly girls only environment.
The forum focused on five key topics integral during the establishment phase of the competition:
1. Coaching techniques for girls to prepare for the physicality of the game
2. A workshop for team managers to share their ideas on the season so far
3. A discussion on the rules of the game
4. The philosophy of sharing and rotating players
5. The encouragement to maximise participation, enjoyment and promoting the spirit of the game
"The competition has started very well with some close matches, lots of fun and some excellent skills" commented SDJFL President Chris Thomas. "The forum was a chance for the competing teams to come together to share their experiences so that we can continue to grow the league and encourage more girls to play."
AFL Victoria Football Development Manager Greg Liddell also presented on the night and was pleased with the outcomes of the meeting. "The spirit of sharing in the forum was fantastic. The clubs have really got behind the competition and while its only beginning the standard and spirit of participation has been first class."
"Female participation is the fastest growing segment in football" added AFL Goulburn Murray Region General Manager Martin Gleeson. "Its great to have a female competition in the region and we want to encourage as many girls as possible to translate their interest in the game to cross the boundary line and actively participate."
The League currently has the four teams of Mooroopna, Kyabram, Echuca and Notre Dame competing with more teams expected to enter from next season.
Girls interested in joining the league and playing this season are encouraged to contact AFL Victoria Football Development Manager Greg Liddell on 0408 393 514 or Chris Thomas SDJFL President on 0418 544 638.
