AFL Goulburn Murray has joined forces with Shepparton Police, Shepparton’s Ethnic Council and Kildonan UnitingCare to organise a big day out at tomorrow’s Hawthorn v Melbourne AFL Game at the MCG.
With the focus on multiculturalism and community engagement 50 local community members will depart the Shepparton Police Station at 12:45 and return Saturday night after the game.
"For many of the people attending the game, it will be the first time they have been to an AFL clash" commented Shepparton Police Multicultural Liaison Matthew Walker. "It’s all about community integration with members of the indigenous and multicultural communities as well as members of AFL Goulburn Murray, Shepparton Council and Kildonan UnitingCare all coming together to hopefully see the Demons upset the Hawks."
Chris Hazelman, Manager of the Ethnic Council is very supportive of the initiative. "Taking young people from new arrival communities to an Australian Rules Football match is an excellent introduction to a significant part of Australian culture and provides an opportunity for collaboration between local agencies, Victoria Police and AFL Goulburn Murray."
"Kildonan UnitingCare(formerly Cutting Edge) is also happy to collaborate in an event such as this" added Teresa Carney, Manager of New Arrival Support Services. "It is a great opportunity for our clients to experience a very Australian cultural event."
"It builds bridges to the broader community and creates opportunities for joining sporting associations, which are such a big part of and link to the local community.’
