For the third year running primary schools in and around Echuca have come together to compete for glory on the field and raise money for Breast Cancer Network Australia off it.
The 2014 primary school girl’s competition for Grade 5 and 6 girls was held on 17 October in Moama with eight schools participating in the round robin event. Echuca East PS was the eventual winner remaining undefeated throughout an evenly contested day.
For the past two years the competition has been raised to another level to also promote and fundraise for Breast Cancer Network Australia.
"The interest in girls football has grown significantly over the past three years" notes AFL Goulburn Murray Football Development Manager Trevor Mellington. "Playing numbers have grown and this competition is now an important day on the school’s football calendar."
"The competition is managed in partnership with SEDA Shepparton and the students have really driven the concept of the event being more than just about football."
"The support of organisations such as Echuca Workers & Services Club and Intersports Bennetts has been instrumental in raising almost $5,000 for BCNA in the last two events and we are very grateful for their support."
AFL Goulburn Murray Region General Manager Martin Gleeson and SEDA Shepparton Diploma Graduate Brittany Tancred presented a cheque for this year’s competition to local Breast Care Network Australia nurse Michelle Dunne at GV Health in front of the Peter Copulos Cancer and Wellness Centre.
