In a major coup for umpiring in the region ex-AFL players Paul Brown (Geelong), Jason Wild (Collingwood), Derek Hall (Geelong), Craig Scholl (North Melbourne) and Anthony Stevens (North Melbourne) have been recruited by the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association to officiate in matches and mentor umpires for the 2014 season.
With a combined experience of over 750 games at the top level between them, their playing credentials can’t be questioned and their transition to umpiring will greatly promote the pathway opportunity for ex-players to remain in the game through umpiring.
In more recruiting news ex-AFL umpires Shane McDonald and David Ackland will also don the whistle for the GVFUA this season lending their significant expertise and experience to the men in white.
Local football identities Fred Andronaco (ex- GVFUA umpire), George Trianidis (Shepp United legend) and father-son duo Wayne and Matthew Byers will also pull on the whites and officiate during the 2014 season.
All of the new recruits will be present at the GVFUA’s first training session for 2014 on Thursday 23 January 2014.
