AFL Goulburn Murray are pleased to announce the formation of a Youth Girls Academy to provide talented female footballers across the region with the opportunity to fine tune and develop their abilities.
The Academy, also in partnership with Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers will be launched with a Training Camp on 22 and 23 September at Kialla Park and 30 September at Epsom where 44 nominated players will vie for the 30 places in the Academy on offer.
The Head Coach of the new Academy is Murray Bushrangers U16 Assistant Coach Sam Ahmet. Sam is an experienced and respected coach through his work with Rumbalara, Shepparton East and currently as an Assistant at Shepparton United. Current Mooroopna Youth Girls and Subway Shield Assistant Coach Mick Power is the Assistant Coach bringing his wealth of knowledge and coaching of female athletes to the program.
AFL Goulburn Murray Football Development Manager Trevor Mellington is excited at the opportunities this new initiative will provide. “The 44 nominated players have come from the Shepparton District and Bendigo Youth Girls competitions as well as players nominated from Bright, Benalla, Albury and Wodonga.”
“This program will be a great opportunity for the girls to further develop their talent.”
“This is another step in the female player pathway and there is no doubt the local Youth Girls competitions and the Subway Shield representative programs will benefit greatly from the Academy.”
“Once the 30 girls have been selected they will train once a fortnight alternating at Kialla and Epsom to work on their skills and game play as well as nutrition, fitness and mental skills training.”
Murray Bushrangers Talent Manager Lee Fraser sees great potential in the Academy “this is a great value addition to the Bushrangers program” he noted, “the selected girls will have a great opportunity to work closely with reputed coaches in the region in a more concentrated environment.”
“With seven Victoria Country representatives already in the Squad, the talent base is impressive.”
“The Academy will also then be able to compete against others in selection trials for the State team to participate in future National Championships.”
