Last year's winner of the award Karla Spilarewicz has had an excellent season at the Dockers and previous recipients have tended to become league stars in their subsequent years. This year's winner was a very tough assignment to choose from with so many rookies, so the selectors first agreed on a shortlist of rookies at each club before the umpires selected on a 3-2-1 basis.
There were many worthy nominees who probably would have won in another year. Those who polled well included Simone Walsh (Sydney Uni), Mai Nguyen (Sydney Uni), Brittany Day (St. George), Kate Woodlands (Bondi) and Georgia Woodyard (Wests).
Our winner is Una McKay from the Bondi Shamrocks. Hailing from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Una took up Australian Rules Football after the International Rules game last year. Playing in the midfield/rover position Una has excellent ball skills, grits and determination which has led her to being selected in the NSW State Team playing in Perth this year as well as the SWAFL Rookie team that took on the USA.
SWAFL congratulates Una and all fellow rookies for a great first season and hopes it's the first of many.
